tried two capture cards, I get blank preview window, either version 1.9.11/ 1.10.4. In other softwares MPC-HC, OBS - no problemo, all works as usual.

In Vdub always used to work fine on Win7/8,
But now after update to 8.1 blank preview.
Sometimes I see graph constructed in 'remote filter graph' view in graphedit, but in Vdub window its empty.

Tried 7/8 compatibility mode too, and to run as admin - still no joy.
tried to reset registry settings too, not helping.

P.S capture/recording still works (only blind, no preview)

the only trick I found to enable preview is to check Video -> Histogram... option, then I get the preview and the histogram that I don't need.
but this is silly, I never had to do this on old OS'

It sounds like the video capture device is producing a video format that VirtualDub can decode, but that there isn't a codec installed in the system for. By default, the Preview mode has DirectShow doing the display, which means you need a codec installed to decode the captured video. When Preview Acceleration is enabled or when one of the options is enabled that requires processing of the video like Histogram, VirtualDub takes over this task and can decode the video itself. Installing ffdshow-tryouts and toggling the appropriate options in its Video Configuration panel is the best way to get what you need.

hi phaeron, you are right not only Histogram, Preview acceleration also helps get video preview.
however, with these functions disabled, even though ffdshow seems properly configured and working in the graph, still Vdub preview window is blank.
Please see this screenshot, I see the graph built in graphedit, and tooltip from ffdshow decoder in tray, but Vdub window is empty.

If it's a YUV format, it could still be something with the specific format being produced -- one of the problems that can occur is negative heights, which is supposed to be ignored for YUV formats but sometimes isn't. The other possibility is that DirectShow's Video Renderer is having problems. You might try fiddling with the output options in ffdshow video decoder configuration and disabling some modes -- straight RGB might work a bit better. Disabling desktop composition also might have an effect, but since you're running Windows 8 that might not be effective.
