Hi,
I'm in the process of digitizing my old VHS homevideos. On many of my old recordings there is a very specific artifact: near vertical edges, where the color changes from dark to bright, the video source contains short black horizontal lines. It's probably best to show a few examples:

The third example is the most extreme one, number one and two are more representative.
The black lines are located at their respective position only for one frame. In the next frame, a similiar number of black lines appears at different positions along the same vertical edges. In the example, the right side shows the output after deinterlacing: as the black lines kind of look like interlacing artifacts, the deinterlacing filter kills some of the lines, but not all of them.
Does that specific artifact have a name? How do I go about removing the black lines?
Best regards, tannentree

I am afraid that there is no immediat solution for this.
Probably you have the same phenomenon when you look these images via your television (but maybe less extreme) ? Do you have the same problem with other VHS tapes ? Do you have the possibility to test with an other VHS player/recorder ?
These questions are only to localize the origin of the problem, maybe it can help ...
Personally, I have no knowledge about a filter that could remove these kind of horizontal lines.
On the contrary, the vertical edges at the left and the right and also the troubled lines at the bottom are normal for VHS-tapes. You can remove these edges via the 'Cropping...'-function in the "null transform" or in the "resize" videofilter. |
