Some miscelleneous ramblings about my thoughts on vp3:
I've encoded my first vp3 video a few days ago and once i figured out that the codec configurations wanted the bitrate in KBytes a second instead of Kbits per second I was on my way. (I kept wondering why my output file was so large ) I looked around and couldn't seem to find any help on the codec configuration and so I used a bitrate of 128 kbps (32KBps) and moved the maximum keyframe interval from the default to 300 frames. For such a low bitrate even for a 320x128 resolution movie the quality was remarkably good. I ended up muxing the video with a vorbis mono -q0 soundtrack for a nice 178 MB 1.5 hour movie.
The Theora project along with vorbis audio is going to make a great alternative to Real Video and WMV. Once VDub support for both is implemented and more players like the Core Media Player start cropping up I think this format is really going to take off. The "sweet spot" for VP3 is going to be the low bitrates that MPEG4 compression can't seem to handle without bad macroblocks. Media outlets are always in a struggle to maximize profits and once a few of them realize that there's a free alternative to the restrictive licensing of other programs, look for this one to take over. |

Welcome to the club. We should start seeing some Theora alpha news and followed by beta in the next few months. |

Hi there, I was really really interested in your post regarding the Vp3 codec and was wondering where I could download it from. All I could find on the On2 technologies page was a OpenSource 3.2 (?)
If you could point me in the right direction, I would grateful.

Found it with Google at www.vp3.com , here's another interesting link for a capture program:

3.2 is the latest public version. It is what Theora will be developed from. But as of yet no public Theora code. Alphas are supposed to hit real soon.
I dare say for cartoon content VP3 kicks any MPEG4 codecs butt. Possibly even Real Video 9. And that is saying something as VP3 is somewhat old compared to them. Makes me wonder why most of the fansub groups waste their time with Divx3 or possibly SBC. |

they're weird
going way off topic, about the smiley buttons (and bbcode wrappers), why can't they insert where the cursor is instead of at the very end of the post, not every thinks of what they're going to post in sequence, I'm very scatter brained ya know
