For a lot of codecs there is a 32bit and a 64bit version (e.g. AAC ACM).
Which one do I need for VD when I run 32bit VD on a 64bit Win7?
How do I find out which version 32bit/64bit and which release number is currently installed on a system?

32bit virtualdub requires 32bit codecs/plugins 64bit virtualdub requires 64bit codecs/plugins The only difference between 32 and 64bit OS is that 64bit OS can run 32 and 64bit programs, the above restrictions still apply

If you mean virtualdub then 32bit virtualdub is called virtualdub.exe and 64bit virtualdub is called veedub.exe Start the .exe and it says what version it is in the title bar For codecs there's no standard way, it may say in it's configuration options, in the add/remove program list, or you might even have to track down the file and check it's properties for version numbers
