i hear people lately using xvid for this or xvid for that
I thought that the standard nowadays is x264
is it worth it to use xvid in for anything nowadays?

Five possible reasons it's still popular

Works on older devices
Less cpu needed for decoding
Faster encodes
Easier to configure
It's what they found in a guide using google

Can't say if it's still worth using it or not though

Maybe many people have tried the x264 that has many complicated settings. Where is enough to put anyone of using it. This x264 build has far fewer settings and much simpler to use with virtualdub http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/

You may find that x264 encodes better than xvid for video quality and encode speed.

With Xvid I have noticed other people attain better video quality by encoding to a certain file size (such as various spread groups do, had done in the past). For x264 settings see dlonerangers x264 quick guide on this forum. Tweak the x264 settings for video quality or use as the picture guide shows

Honestly, with free encoders like freemake, you don't need to know anything biggrin.gif. I stopped using xvid about 4 years ago myself. Xvid also got bloated and they stopped developing it.

PS xvid always gave me bad color/saturation when encoding in vdub.

You'd got something wrong with your xvid then - that's not normal at all

Freemake.....
Where to start?
With all the bloatware and search interceptors it likes to install unless you do a custom install, or that it's only settings are bitrate and 1 or 2 pass?

I think there's a room for easy converter programs, but you couldn't pay me to recommend that one

Lets say you post a software name as you have done (which also I have done in the past). Problem though is when does another person read your post with helpful advice that may fix their problem. Maybe it is the same day, next month, year, decade where they do not look at the post date. Or are so in need to fix a problem that they then try your suggestion and install the software that you advise by then the software could have or already have mal, pay, scamware or others etc. This is normal for all video converters so far, with a exception of one or two maybe they also go the same way sooner or later

Maybe it is then better to say nothing. Fine if it makes people think Virtualdub could be rubbish that would be an opinion. Though usually there is more than one way to do tasks with virtualdub such as with using AviSynth or Virtualdub external encoders

However this type of problem never seems to affect other free tools such as muxers, demuxers and other such tools

Some words on xvid-compression...
I have never seen any differens between xvid compression and x264 compression other than file size for xvid compressed .avi files are bigger
If you have a xvid compressed .avi file you can take it into Sony Movie Studio and add titles and music without rerendering. Very fast process.
I have never succeded to add things to a mp4 file in Movie Studio without rerendering.
In short: xvid is very simple to use.
Regards

You are right, you have to be careful because they do add some bloatware by default. I always do custom installs on all software. Plus, I also block them with a firewall to make sure they dont call home. Freemake used to be pretty clean but lately is going towards shareware. I also use xmedia recode at times, this is pretty clean install but to many undocumented options for me and kind of buggy. I still use vdub for processing video but not compressing it. Its to damn easy with the other software.

I used xvid for many years and some of the primary reasons why I stopped was incompatible with adobe products or at least it used to be.

I think the color profile was wrong and never looked into it or at least this is why I think xvid colors were offset for me.

Rendering time was another reason why I moved to other things for compression.
But the most important one was a simple interface with great results.

PS I do use xvid compression when I want to play something on a old divx dvd player biggrin.gif
