Vfw Codec For Decompres; Acm Codecs For Encode?

Sorry for this simple questions but can one say

"VfW codecs" are for decompressing a (avi, mpg, mkv) video
while
"ACM codecs" are for encoding inton (an AVI) video?

Is this statement correct?

Not quite

VFW codecs are Video For Windows codecs - they're video compression/decompression codecs
ACM codecs are Audio Compression Manager codecs - they're audio compression/decompression codecs

Either type of codec may do compression, decompression or both
