Hi there guys, I'm Italian. First of all, my congrats for this forum, I've always looked for a site where I could find a good support for this great software... and now I found it! wink.gif

I need to capture keyframes from MKV's file, ripped in x264, with AVI's files I didn't have any problems, I just had to install XviD codec and it worked. But with MKV's files it seems a bit complicated: I've downloaded the Matroska plugin from here, placed it in the plugins folder and tried to open a MKV... no way, first appears the screen Parsing Matroska file, then I get this error.

Why? What else I have to do? Please, help me. Thanks! smile.gif

You have to do the same as you did with xvid and install the codec you need
X264vfw https://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/

You'll need to do that with any codecs you need. If the audio is aac then there's a link for fcchandlers aac acm codec in my sig

Thanks dloneranger, now I can load properly MKV's files into VD. But each files I try to open has both AC3 and AAC audio track, why VirtualDub doesn't report anything? I didn't install the related plugins still.

You'll get an error when you try to use an audio codec you haven't got installed (except in direct stream copy mode)
Links for both of those acm type codecs are in my sig

To pick between audio streams, use the menu -> audio ->source audio

Not sure what you want reported
You only get the missing codec error because virtualdub's trying to decode the video stream to display the first frame
You're not playing the audio though so there's no message

You can check your file information by the menu -> file -> file information

Ah, now I see... but I use VD only to capture keyframes, I need them for screenshots. So in theory, as I need the video only (for screens), I can do it without installing audio plugins... right?

Yes, they're unneeded if virtualdub isn't actually trying to decode the audio

(Just for anyone else reading or searching)
There's 4 ways

Three plugins -> Matroska, FFMpeg and Directshow found here http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=19488
And by an AVISynth script

Hi there, I'd have another problem with VirtualDub, it's similar to this, so I thought posting here, without opening a new thread.wink.gif

When I try to open an MP4 file, I get this error...

user posted image

... the codec is always x264, but this time the container is MP4. How can I fix it? Is there another plugin I have to download?smile.gif

You'll want one of these

Quicktime plugin - mov/mp4 etc
FFMpeg plugin - lots of file types
DirectShow plugin - lots of file types

Don't get the MP4 plugin, as that's outdated

You mean I have to get, in the page you linked, one of these?

* QuickTime / MPEG-4 / 3GPP (MOV MP4 M4V M4A QT 3GP 3G2 F4V) (by fccHandler)
* QuickTime / MPEG-4 / 3GPP (MOV HDMOV MP4 M4V M4A QT 3GP 3G2 F4V ...) (mod by ale5000 of tateu's one) => mostly superceded by fccHandler's one
* MPEG-4 / 3GPP (MP4 3GP)

But not the last one 'cause it's old?

FccHandlers Quicktime plugin for mp4 and mov's is the better one - the links on that page don't work, but there's a two mirror's lower down the page and in my sig

Personally I'd just go with FFMeg plugin as it can load a lot of formats and it doesn't require external encoders either

Thanks man, you've been really helpful again. But all these procedures, codecs and so on aren't compatible with VirtualDubMod? I can do them only using VirtualDub?

That's the first mention you have made for VirtualDubMod as this is Virtualdub forum the advice you have been given is for Virtualdub. You should have posted for VirtualDubMod in the VirtualDubMod forum

That said VirtualdubMod is now very old compared to the latest Virtualdub build, Virtuldub is the better choice. If you need VirtualDubMod for mkv encode you could use instead Virtualdub external encoders which can also to encode mkv and many other formats and containers. search the forum for example load scripts to use with Virtualdub External Encoders

I agree fcchandlers quicktime is better for avc1, h264, mp4 etc. Though maybe you would find FFMpeg Input Driver much easier to use for loading many different type of videos as dloneranger has stated. Which would load easily your mp4 file that likely is mp4 with avc1/aac - video/audio

VirtualDub is perfect, now, with all plugins installed, it works great. The only reasons why I still use VirtualDubMod are:

- the Stream list feature, I often use it to grab the default audio for muxing and so on;
- the Snapshot source frame feature, I use it to capture screenshot.

For the first one, I don't see the equivalent in VirtualDub. The second one, there is a way but it's a bit "complicated", I have to select Copy source frame to clipboard, then I have to paste it in a graphic software, like Paint. Isn't there a way to capture them directly as in VirtualDubMod?
