For what it's worth:

In VirtualDub 32-bit, QuickTime, vdplugin will open .mov and .MP4 files.

But if I then add MP4InputDriver.vdplugin, neither type of file will open.

It may be that .MP4InputDriver.vdplugin will work in connection with some other files, but this is as far as I've gotten.

Please try to avoid opening multiple threads about the same problem...

Probably by MP4 inputdriver plugin you mean the DirectShow plugin ?
Otherwise please give us a link to that MP4 plugin.

You must know that the QuickTime plugin is using at preference video for windows codecs/decoders and audio ACM codecs,
while DirectShow is using DirectShow ones, like the name is saying.

So it is possible that via QuickTime plugin it works and via DirectShow it does not, or vice versa.

While opening files in VirtualDub, you can best - in the "Open video file" dialogbox - first select the file to open, and then at "Files of type" select one of the inputdriver plugins, before clicking on the Open button. So you are sure about which one of the filters is being used.

If you want to know which video and audio codecs have been used in a videofile, you can use specific tools for that, but you can also install the FFMpeg inputdriver plugin for VirtualDub. This one can open almost any kind of file thanks to its own decoding dll's. When a file is opened via FFMpeg you can look into the File > File Information... to learn about the codecs in that videofile.

Next you can check if these codecs are available on your computer, or not.

Did you read my answer in the other thread ?

A tool that can be interesting to verify actif decoders in Windows 7, is the Windows 7 DirectShow filter tweaker:

About 64-bit VirtualDub, codecs, inputdrivers and filters, I can give you no guarantee, because I can not check this out for myself.
I do not have a 64-bit Windows.

I was just wasting my time...

This then is how it is for others to learn virtualdub. As we know with same questions on the forum. I don't think that will ever stop even if had some giant title to help people starting with virtualdub at very top of the board seen on all forums. We would still get asked why has this happened, or what can I do to make this play etc

As you know I have this idea about a pop-up window so how about we use that. Where when open a file or drag and drop a video picture etc. The pop window will appear and what would be needed is more than we have with file load now. Since no one finds the 'open file with.." very often as can see reading the board. Maybe then we have all video decoder plugin's shown on the window making it more clearer to all. Choose file pick decoder to use and load, with drag and drop file already populated just decoder needed to be chosen. Have also a remember for this file type making easy loading each time.

Well maybe someone else can elaborate on this more since I have no forum feedback from Avery for this window idea. Maybe give more incentive if was used for global file load to make it easy file loading for everyone. All we know something needs to happen for virtualdub else virtualdub keeps losing new users. If virtualdub helps them over the first hurdle then the rest is more or less easy going. TBH I know no other software that is determined to make it hard for new users. With that in mind if we stop replying to all such users that the post same problems maybe Phaeron will do something to help them quicker ?
