Hey guys, so I have a problem:

I am using Virtual Dub and have installed the K-lite mega pack codec. (found here: http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm)

I am using this to try and compress large files that I've made through FRAPS. The problem is is that when I go to Video -> Compression, the codecs aren't listed (I believe it should be x264fvw or something?)

I am running Windows 7, 64-bit OS, I've tried uninstalling and redownloading both vdub and the codec pack.

Any idea what's going on?

For encoding to AVI in VirtualDub, you will need "video for windows" compatible codecs.
Take care to install 32-bits versions of these codecs when you have installed VirtualDub 32-bit.
Even so for 64-bits versions, must be equal.

You can find the x264vfw codec here:

After installation you should find it in VirtualDub's Video > Compression... dialogbox.

Look into this thread for a print screen of common settings (thanks to dloneranger):

Thanks for the response. I installed that codec from the link you gave me, but I'm still not seeing it.

screen shot of my vdub after the install is complete: http://i.imgur.com/oh6OCJm.jpg

I have the 64 bit vdub because I run a 64 bit OS (win 7). Would going down to the 32 bit one help me? I'm not incredibly knowledgeable about this stuff.

Yep, 32bit programs can only use 32bit codecs, 64bit programs can only use 64bit programs
So it should all work as long as you get the same version of both
Note: there are more codecs, filters and plugins available in 32bit versions only - and they'll run fine on a 64 bit OS

Well I was downloading the 64 bit codec with the 64 bit vdub, on a 64 bit OS. I didn't think there would be any problems, but as those screen shots show, I'm still not seeing anything. Any idea why this might be happening? I'm pretty lost.

Sorry, but your screenshot don't show the 64bit version of x264vfw - the 64bit one is x264vfw64
Here's the link for both versions http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/

I'm getting this very same issue. I'm on Windows 8.1 64-bit and I've installed both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the VfW codec and of VirtualDub, but I get nothing showing up in either of them.

Other codecs seem to work - I've gotten the LAME MP3 codec to come up just fine and I'm getting the ffdshow encoder coming up (although bizarrely it's only got four or five entries, I distinctly remember it having x264 options in the past too).

But I don't get why it wouldn't work, I've always used VDub with the VfW H264 encoder and it works great on all my other machines. I thought maybe it's a Windows 8 thing, but the OP on this thread seems to have had precisely this issue with Win7.

Anyone have any ideas?

ffdshow had most of it's encoders removed as they were iffy and they didn't want to keep supporting them
x264vfw works fine on win7, 8 , 8.1
I can't think of any codecs that have issues, even the old ones installed fine for me if run as administrator
Maybe you have a blank entry in your registry?
Re: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=3&t=14258
On 64 bit windows you'd have to check
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
