I have "installed" virtualdub-1.9.11.zip and virtualdub-1.9.11-amd64.zip (unpacked to "C:\Tools\VirtualDub" and "C:\Tools\VirtualDub64", and I have installed "K-Lite_Codec_Pack_980_Full.exe", "K-Lite_Codec_Pack_980_x64.exe" and "klcp_update_982_20130314.exe" (which includes ffdshow).

In VirtualDub-32 I have only these options for "Select video compression":
- Uncompressed
- "Cinepak Codec von Radius", "cvid"
- "Intel IYUV Codec", "i420"
- "Intel IYUV Codec", "iyuv"
- "Microsoft RLE", "mrle", but with restriction "Couldn't find compatible format"
- "Microsoft Video 1", "msvc"

In VirtualDub-64 I have additionally
- "ffdshow Video Codec"
- "Lagatith Lossless Codec"
but not
- "Cinepak Codec von Radius", "cvid"

Can anyone give some hint on what's wrong - why is there no "ffdshow" in 32 bit version? I want to use 32 bit version, because the 64 bit version does not have all the filters I want to use, and in my tests the 64 bit ffdshow with "MJPEG"some times generates "garbage" (some times a 33sec video with quality 85 results in ~700MiB with "noise" instead of ~30MiB).

I already tried to use "DirectShow Filter Configuration" to turn "Don't use ffdshow in" off (both for "ffdshow video decoder" and "ffdshow video decoder (x64)" (the "Use ffdshow only in" is off).

Virtualdub uses the vfw versions, not the directshow ones
I'd get ffdshow and reinstall it (them x86 and x64) from http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

But.... the ffdshow encoders are/were bad and have been deprecated by the developers because they didn't fix/develop/get them working properly
Much better to use the proper encoder for whatever one you want to use

Good encoders

For final output -> xvid, x264
http://www.xvid.org/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/

For intermediate files -> Lagarith

ffdshow isn't needed for encoding video files. It's needed for decoding some.

OK, thanks dloneranger and DarrellS smile.gif.

I didn't know that ffdshow have been deprecated - so I don't care any more why I don't have ffdshow in VirtualDup-32. I installed the recommended codecs and in a first test Xvid (and for special cases Lagarith) seems to be what I need. Only problem is, that "x264vfw" is not available in VirtualDup-64, and that the result of "x264vfw_38_2274bm_36885" is not usable (a test video starts with ~2sec freeze image, while the audio starts direct, so I de-installed "x264vfw". Too bad sad.gif, "x264vfw"generated smallest result, all tests with default settings: 34sec video, 47,4 MiB from KODAK EASYSHARE C183 Digital Camera, 870 MiB uncompressed, 267 MiB Lagarith, 10,1 MiB Xvid, 6,34 MiB x264vfw.

Strange, I use x264vfw all the time without problems
Here's a starting point for config settings with a screenshot
http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...1157&hl=x264vfw
32bit and 64 bit versions are available http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/

With all encoders that use bframes, there can be a delay in virtual dub, equal to the number of bframes while being viewed in virtualdub
When played back in a player, the directshow decoders sort all that out without problems (normally)

I did not change any codec settings. Simply opened the file, selected rotate filter to do 90° right rotation, selected codec "x264vfw", then "File/Save as AVI...".

But I see some warnings opening the original file:

AVI: The text information chunk of type 'IKEY' at 268 was not not fully read because it was too long (8182 bytes).
AVI: Truncated or invalid compressed audio format detected (16 bytes, should be 18). Attempting to fix.

Since Xvid or uncompressed did not result in any problem, I think that the warnings are not the reason for the problem.

Btw. Since I don't see thumbnails of Xvid videos in Picasa, I would like to use MJPG. I found various free codecs, which would you recommend?

Why have you ignored this warning?

Thanks a lot, with "VirtualDup Hack" the result is OK smile.gif.

1. The warning window was in the background during processing, so I missed it.

2. Unfortunately there are so many warnings and dialogues in all windows application, so that such warnings are not recognized in many cases...

3. In case of unusable result, like in this case, I would expect an error instead of warning.

I have never seen any x264 log as you have posted. It has always been set to default Warning which is the problem it should never have been set default as Warning.

Now I can see I will understand x264 more with this log, everyone change it to something else. I have changed it to Info maybe change this to error or other later for error info only when generated. Meanwhile will learn from it, so now start to use x264 that I have feedback to understand it further.
