I've installed the VFW X.264/AVC codec from Sourceforge, but I still can't open either format in Virtualdub. Please could someone offer some guidance? I suppose many people must have worked this out already. I'm on Win 7 x64.

I'm particularly interested in being able to open files made with Handbrake (x.264).

Thanks

It is nothing more but a guess:

If you have installed the 32-bit version of VirtualDub, then you have to install the 32-bit version of the x264vfw codec.
You may not mix these versions. In case of, there is also a 64-bit version of the codec (v264vfw64):

Do you see the codec when you click in VirtualDub, on the Video-menu > Compression... ?
Do you get a particular error message ?

If you should need an AAC or AC3 audio codec for VirtualDub:

In case of difficulties with installation of these : use dloneranger versions:

Hi

Thanks for replying.

I have 32 bit version of both, and the codec does show up in Video > Compression so I imagine I can use it for encoding at least.

The error I get is "The file [...] is of an unknown or unsupported file type". I get this with all the h/x.264 files I've tried. Perhaps there's some way I can tell VirtualDub the type to try? The FourCC codes check out and match what X264VFW lists.

Thanks

Wild guess, the file isn't an avi
If it's not, you'll need a plugin to handle it's file type

Thanks! I installed all the filters from Fcchandler and now it opens :-)

I've missed Virtualdub. It's gonna be nice to be able to use it again biggrin.gif
