Last week I received a Tascam DR-07 MKII recorder and it does 16 and 24 bit wav files as well as mp3 from 32 to 320Kbps.
On many forums users question if using 24 bits recording at 96Khz is overkill and it seems to be split when it comes to opinions. Most of the talk is about music and not voice but I'm assuming that since music has more frequencies involved then maybe it would be advantageous for that and not voice?
The model I got:
I will admit that the sound quality is way better than my Olympus DS30.
Tascam has a windjammer for this recorder but I went with the Rode Dead Kitten instead which is almost half the price of the Tascam version windjammer, Rycote costs even more. The Rode does it's job well and does fit the DR-07 MKII fine. This setup looks funny, somewhat. It's amazing the looks I have received so far from using the Dead Kitten and also my Rycote for my DS30, lol.

Do you need 24/96 for voice?
No, you don't need it.
...Imagine you have a RED 5K footage and you're going to convert it to SD NTSC. You can't keep all the detail. It's just impossible. Plus, you can run into problems of maintaining the sharpness/clarity of the certain details you need while avoiding moire and aliasing. The point is -- high quality resampling is a challenging task.
All the same about audio. You may happen to find yourself in need of doing extra work (or spending extra money) to convert your 24/96 record to 16/48 in really high quality.
