Hello Everyone, I'm kind of at my wits end. I'm trying to determine why this is happening all of a sudden. In the last few months, I try to compress video from FRAPS with VirtualDub and it crashes my enter computer to turn off. I bring it back up with no problem, but there is nothing in the event viewer logs that I can see. Now, in the past, this worked without an issue.
For the year prior, I was able to compress without issue. I uninstalled and reinstalled the codec I was using (and always been using) which is vfw264 codec.
Any thoughts elsewhere I could start to troubleshoot this issue? If you need further information, please let me know and I'll get it to you! |

Does the computer really crash, or does it shut down at the end of the processing ?
The only way to make the computer to shut down after the compression process has finished, is via the File-menu > Job Control... dialogbox.
There you have the Options-menu > When finished > Do nothing / Sleep / Shut down / Hybernate. |

This is usually an issue with overheating.
Your computer specs would be helpful. It's a good idea to clean your PC a couple of times a year to keep all the dust bunnies from collecting and blocking your air flow on your heat sink. Encoding x264 is CPU entensive and will overheat the CPU if it doesn't have adequate cooling.
Also, if you're going to be using Virtualdub a lot. It's a good idea to learn how to use the external encoder feature and use the x264 command line encoder. There are guides here and plenty of people who can help you. |
