News/Announcements is for VirtualDub news, so I moved this to the general discussion forum.
Frankly, I'm still surprised that DivX is around. H.264 is a huge threat, and IMO pretty much the only reason that DivX is still viable is that being MPEG-4 based its decoding complexity is lower and can work better on lower-powered devices. As CPU power generally goes up and dedicated H.264 decode hardware spreads, it's going to look worse and worse for DivXNetworks. Adobe/Macromedia skipped DivX/MPEG-4 and went to On2 VP6 and then H.264; Nokia wants H.264 for rich mobile web presence. It wouldn't be a good thing if DivXNetworks went away, as they're pretty good at delivering an enthusiast-oriented codec, but ultimately people will be forced to go where the content is, and even with MKV I don't see why people would use DivX in MKV when they could use H.264 in MKV.
That having been said, it was fun trying to find a computer in the house that could play H.264 at 1080p, since we don't have a video card that accelerates it....

DivX is moving on to H264 as well.

Let's see if DivX can achieve the same thing with H264/MKV as they did with AVI/MPEG4 ASP on the home player market. I'd be pleasantly surprised if they can.

DivX 7 = H.264, the encoder is currently in alpha, the decoder in beta.
The above link is a tutorial for the encoder, and links to the decoder newspost aswell. There are torrents out there with both if you don't want to go to the trouble of PM-ing the devs to get the packages, but considering their tutorial, I think they'd be happy to help you out .

Just a slight OT: has anyone got interlaced encoding to work with the divx alpha encoder? I always get an error message stating I've exceeded the profile limits. Can't get a response from DivX. |

Duh.... the devs actually contacted me a while back to offer me the testing releases, but I didn't have time to participate. I didn't make the connection.
I guess the next question is how good they can get their decoder and encoder.... quality-wise the competition would be CoreAVC and x264, I believe.
