Vdub crashing when selecting video compression codec.
Ok someone here has got to help me. Whenever I try to open the codec selection screen, vdub crashes. And no I haven’t upgraded to win 2000 or XP, nor do I even have a ASUS video card. I’m using 1.4.13 but have also tried 1.4.10 with the same unfortunate results (for the record I have not loaded any filters either). I have an AMD K7 500 with 192 ram, a 16 meg vodoo3000 with win98 second ed. This problem seems to also occur with other video converters. I’ve tried unloading and reloading all the divx codecs I can find. Please help! I’ve searched all the forums and google searches I can think of.

It seems your problem is system specific. My suggestion is do a clean installation of Windows. If you're dealing with video you really should upgrade to Windows 2000. No matter what codec you're using you're system is going to be incredibly slow. Also make sure that you have the latest DirectX 8.1. If you do opt to install Win2k format your drive for NTFS, make sure you also have service pack 3, and the latest drivers installed. As an alternative to doing a full system reinstall you might want to try using Norton Utilites to fix your registry.

Start commenting out video codecs in system.ini until the crashing stops -- it sounds like you have a rogue codec if other programs are doing it too. All video codecs are under the [drivers32] group of the form "VIDC.(code) = (driver)" -- just add a semicolon at the beginning of the line. You do not have to reboot the system; you will need to restart VirtualDub but the crashing will take care of that.

Thank you greatly! By using the semi-colon approach, I discovered the not so happy video driver was for an old web cam I used to have. It’s gone and it now it’s working. I was even able to do it over my lunch break.
Thanks Guys
