The first item in the Capture menu "Capture video" lists the hot keys as "F5, F6", but this is tragically misleading.
Let's examine the following hypothetical scenario:
A man has spent an evening turning his kitchen into a recording studio, testing and tuning all the hardware and software so that his wife can record preparing a very special family dish so that her father will be able to make it himself even though she can't be with him for Thanksgiving.
With "enable multisegment capture" enabled, the couple shoot dozens of scenes, periodically checking the video and audio for quality as the elaborate dish unfolds. Now, quite comfortable with the software, he randomly presses F5 instead of F6 to record the final scene; after all, they're the same thing, right?
Now, the dish is finished, and the video is almost entirely gone forever.
As you might guess, this is not a hypothetical scenario. Also, silently blasting over an existing recording is not what I would call "safe mode".
Things I would recommend: - Separate menu entries for F5/F6 - Enable "safe mode" toggle - A confirmation dialog when starting/enabling safe mode that elaborates on the perils therein (especially if "enable multisegment capture" is checked).
Guys, I'm a programmer myself. I know exactly why this was done, but please change it. I really got screwed tonight. |

I'm confused... the official version I make, at least, doesn't have a "safe mode" in capture mode... and F5/F6 literally are the same, as they're identical entries in the accelerator table. If you're using a modified version that has different behavior for these keys, you'll have to ask whoever made those modifications. |
