I think it would be useful if VDub selected Huffyuv by default(if installed, of course). Just yesterday I was cutting a video and accidently didnīt set to DSC. Thus is was compressed as uncompressed RGB. Since the video was short anyway, it didnīt matter, but when I wanted to append I couldnīt. Itīs no big problem, but itīs annoying - I think this could be solved if VDub uses Huffyuv by default - Iīm sure that anyone whoīs seriously editing videos would use it anyway.
Second: Bring back the warning messages for uncompressed - theyīre apparently more important than they look.
(Note: Iīm using 1.5.4 - so maybe thatīs already done)

I think VirtualDub should select the last used codec for both video and audio compression.
I believe almost all users would agree that saving as uncompressed rgb is a very rarely used feature. So why should that be the default? |

the stuff you guys talk about can be done thru so-called "save processing settings" feature.....
prior to anything, just load it up and there, everything as you like it.........
"default" is "do-nothing" and that's uncompressed rgb.....
bah.......

The last used codec wonīt be any help for me - I agree that it is useful, but when Iīm working on a video, I have to compress it sometimes, to have a better look. (WHen using Huffyuv, I canīt be sure the video plays as smooth as it should).
I know about the processing settings - but thatīs almost as much work as selecting it. Itīs useful when using several filters, but just for codec? Doesnīt pay off IMO.
Thus I recommend using Huffyuv as default, instead of uncompressed.
And, no - default is not "dö-nothing" itīs "decompress but donīt recompress".

No, itīs not a serious problem, but since most of us ran out of those - well, now only the not-so-serious problems appear ;-)
If Huffy isnīt installed, then donīt select it - it could revert to RGB in that case.
You donīt use Huffyuv? Interesting - Iīd thought that most people use it - maybe Iīm wrong. Whenever I edit a video(i.e. cutting AND processing via filters), I switch to Huffyuv, thatīs why I recommended that.

Sorry to bump the old thread up, but I just had that problem again. I saved the file and went away(it took "only" 5 minutes, but itīs boring to watch the computer), but when I came back I got an error message that thereīs not enough HDD space to continue - although I KNEW there were at least 6Gigs left.
Guess the problem! - Right - uncompressed RGB. Since I just previously edited the file(and saved it), I closed VDub(to reset all settings - that way I canīt forget anything) and loaded the new file. Set the filters - and let it work. But forget to set the codec, again. I know itīs my fault, not VDubīs - but if it, as I said in the first post, selected Huffyuv by default(maybe making it a parameter?), it wouldnīt have occured.

I can't believe that I'm bumping a 10 year old thread.... But I could really use a simple option in the program preferences to set a default codec for both video and audio. I primarily use VDub to compile up image sequences, and most of the time I want to compile to the same codec. I know that I could use the load processing settings, but remembering to do this every time I launch VDub is not really any different than remembering to change codecs every time.
Thanks! |

Save your favorite processing settings Create a shortcut to virtualdub Right click the shortcut and select properties At the end of the target line add something like this - change the path to your saved settings
| CODE | | /s "C:\Users\Public\Documents\X264.vdscript" |
(there's a space before the /s)
When started from the shortcut it'll load those settings
Not sure if that will work with virtualdubmod If it doesn't then you're out of luck as you'll get a new version shortly after the end of the universe
