Nope, that's totally incorrect -> the mac had 'universal' binaries, but they were more like .zip files, that had both the 32bit and 64bit version inside
There are 64bit programs and 32bit programs
64bit OS can run both types, but the programs themselves can only use the same 'bitness' of dll's and codecs

I already said, when in AviInfo -> section Created by: it's wrote for ex. this: VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release), in VirtualDubMod it's in Streams -> Video comments (or Stream comments) -> Generic

Maybe it is time to resume things:
1) Download most recent (32-bit) version of VirtualDub 1.10.5-test4.zip from here:

2) Install this version : this means simply extract the files out of the ZIP-file to for exemple:
> C:\Program Files\VirtualDub 1.10.5\*.* and - when using WinZip - check "Use folder names", so you will also have an empty subfolder "plugins32".
3) Download most recent version of the FFMPegPlugin for VirtualDub from here:
> http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub...a6.zip/download
this should enable you to open practically any kind of video-file with VirtualDub, thus not only AVI's ...
4) Install that FFMpegPlugin : this means extract the files out of the ZIP-file from the "ffmpegplugin\plugins32" folder to for exemple:
> C\Program Files\VirtualDub 1.10.5\plugins32\*.*
So you should find the file "FFInputDriver.vdplugin" in C:\Program Files\VirtualDub 1.10.5\plugins32\*.* and several "*.dll" files in a subfolder ..\ffdlls\*.*
5) Now when starting VirtualDub, and via the File-menu > Open video file..., do select (= one single click) whatever video (*.MKV, *.WMV, *.MP4, ...) and then at "Files of type" do select "FFMpeg Supported Files". After that, click Open.
This should already work ( I hope ).

To be able to encode to Xvid from within VirtualDub:
1) Download the 32-bit version of the Xvid codec from here:

(seems like this codec has been updated this last days from version 1.3.2 to 1.3.3)
2) Install that Xvid codec (by double-clicking the downloaded executable)
3) In VirtualDub - after having opened for exemple a WMV-video - you can now re-encode that video to an AVI:
> first set the Video- and the Audio-menu to "Full processing mode"
> then click the Video-menu > Compression... > select Xvid codec and OK,
> then click the Audio-menu > Compression... > select an audio-codec and OK.
> finally click the File-menu > Save as AVI... , select a destination and a filename and click Save
a new AVI should now be created.

To extract the audio from a video-file:
1) open the video-file
2) set the Audio-menu to Full processing mode
3) also in the Audio-menu : click Compression... and select whether "no compression" or select an audio-codec for the encoding of the output file
4) in the File-menu : click "Save WAV..." , select a destination and introduce a filename, click Save
a new WAV / MP3 / ... should be created.

this is too uncomfortable, in VirtualDubMod was easier, besides I don't need to save WAV, if it was MP3
anyway there is a problem to convert ogm files with XviD codec and OGG Vorbis codec to avi files with XviD codec and MP3 codec, it's just show estimated time a several hours and the time is growing on an on, so I even don't know how much long it will take
ths is what I get in log:

till I write this post the estimated time increased to 12 hours, but don't tell me that I try to convert on a too slowly CPU, cause it's Dual Core CPU 2.8 GHz, and other files was converted in 15-20 minutes
by the way, you didn't tell how to make that after convert to see in AviInfo -> section Created by: to be wrote for ex. this: VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release), in VirtualDubMod it is in Streams -> Video comments (or Stream comments) -> Generic, in VirtualDub I didn't find where concretly to write it |

File menu->export->raw audio
That will save the currently selected audio track to a file
You might have to type the right file extension though

Not really, it's a problem with that one file

It's stuck trying to decode the audio, use a different codec (mp3's can use internal or external codec, select which in the preferences) or export it and convert with something else
(unless it just happens to be a bad sector on the hard drive)

you already wrote this, but I telled that don't know in what line concretely to write that I mentioned above, there is no line named Generic
btw, Lame MP3 behaves strangely, I have chose Stereo mode - Stereo and unchecked Average bitrate, but anyway it remains how it was: Joint-Stereo mode and Average bitrate checked, why is that? |

There seems to be some real communication problem going on here
file menu->set text information is the only place to edit the video's text in virtualdub
I tested a file created with virtualdubmod and it shows "VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 (build 2542/release)" on the line 'software'
I deleted that text and saved the file - virtualdubmod did not appear as text in the video file at all
There is nowhere else to edit the text information in virtualdub
The livelock is virtualdub getting stuck while trying to read the source file and decode the audio
Virtualdub can decode the audio using an external windows codec, or it's own internal decoder
Preferences->avi->change "prefer internal audio decoders over installed third-party codecs"
Then open the video and try again
There are plenty of programs that can convert audio from one format to another eg Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
You can export the audio and convert it with something like that if virtualdub won't do it
Lame's setting are selected by picking a setting from the list, not by the configure button (that doesn't actually do anything)
