I was always using default values and they never let me down ..... also i am strongly convinced that the Vdub settings will be ignored by most codecs, as they will use internal settings to decide when to insert a keyframe .....

That depends (in my opinion) of what is important for you:

Scene change treshold high means that you will get not so many keyframes, cause some scene changes could not be detected, maybe result in better visual quality because of the few keyframes, but you could get probs when sliding in the video.

Low treshold can result in more keyframes than that are needed, cause keyframes are set where they ar not needed, because of no scene change -> maybe worse quality but better sliding.

Cause of this 50 is a good compromise between the 2 extremes.

rolleyes.gif I hope the codec detects exactly as much keyframes as needed, AND NOT MORE, but if you are afraid, try 60 or a bit higher

PS: My English is very bad today, I see, sorry for this, hope you got what I wanted to say !

???

Isnt it the other way round ?
I think that maybe VDub ignores the codec settings.
But I am not sure. What i said was only "theoratical knowledge"

as you see I use 50 as well, and as you said Christian:

It lever let me down... wink.gif

As far as I know it, VDub can oblige the codec to compress one frame as a key-Frame. Writing in the AVI that the frame is a Key-frame is even easier.

However, I'm not good enough in C/C++ to be really sure of that. dry.gif

I don't mean the codec's scene change threshold, I mean the 2 sliders in VDub's Options-->Preferences-->Scene box, do they have any relevance to the codec at all, what the best for both sliders, etc. I tend to leave DivX's motion detection at 50 also, but what tends to be best for VDubs settings

That's for codecs that don't have property pages like DivX.

Check the Intel codecs for instance.

Nope. The scene change thresholds are for the shuttle buttons below the position slider and determine how sensitive the shuttle is to "scenes" when deciding to stop. They have no effect on encoding.

Ok, that's always useful to know, I've been wanting it to not stop so often when chopping stuff out
