DVD:

Maybe you should give it a try with VirtualDub 1.9.11 (or later) in combination with the MPEG-2 video-plugin and AC3-ACM codec
1) Download:
= http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/

2) Installation:
= unzip the downloaded Virtualdub-file to for exemple C:\Program Files\VirtualDub
= unzip the downloaded MPEG-2 plugin to the plugins32 subfolder of your VirtualDub installation
= unzip the AC3ACM.zip to some folder and do the installation via the *.inf or *.bat files

3) Open a DVD:
= Start VirtualDub
= Click File > Open video file...
= navigate to your DVD-reader
= select the first VTS_01_1.VOB file and check "Ask for extended options after this dialog" in the dialogbox
= click Open
= in the "Extended Options" dialogbox, check at least the "Open multiple VOB files as one virtual file" checkbox
= click OK
After a while you should see the result
Via File > File Information..., you can verify the Video- and Audio Stream

4) Create AVI:
= in Video-menu, set "Full processing mode" and in Compression... select a codec + settings
= in Audio-menu, set "Full processing mode" and in Compression... select a codec + settings
= in File-menu, File > Save as AVI...

Video-for-windows codecs for VirtualDub:
- H264 : http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/
- Xvid : http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

Please come back, if you would need more info...

BLU-RAY
No experience with this...
Possibility to open *.MKV files with extra plugin(s) for VirtualDub... (+ Haali splitter or LAVfilter ?)
> Matroska inputdriver
> FFMpeg inputdriver
> DirectShow inputdriver

Inputdrivers =
> http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=12664
Splitters =
> https://code.google.com/p/lavfilters/
