It isn't locked AFAIK, it's just not registered with the ACM. I got it to work on my WinXP system, but I don't remember exactly how. If you use XP, run regedit and find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm", and make sure it's value is "L3codecp.acm." Then reboot. That might do it.

Well, I don't know if it's a good idea to reply here....
The change in the registry key value works fine with WIN XP SP2 and Windows Media Player 10, but don't work with WIN 2000 and WMP 9. MPEG Layer-3 just disappears from the list of available codecs in Menu->Audio->Select Audio Compression.
Is there any specific codec that should be installed (like AC3ACM instead of AC3Filter) ?

You need to install Windows Media 10, because IIRC Microsoft didn't license the MP3 codec for WMP9. |

I tried to install it by downloading from the MS site, but MS checks the OS and if you're running WIN 2000, MS only offers WMP9.....
Well, I'll try again immediatly

Well, you can download WMP10, go to the MS download page, select "Windows Media" as product/technology, and you can get WMP10.
But there is a warning on the page, WMP10 is only supported by the WIN XP family.
Back to my question Which codec should I installed ? Thanks for your help J-Pierre |

you just need to install WMP10, the codec comes with it.
if you made the adjustment to the registry it should work then...

Indeed, WMP10 is only available for WinXP operating systems. I imagine it is their first real answer to the popular iTunes, which is only available for Win2k+. |

To note, I had to uninstall the LAME ACM codec before it would allow me to see the WMP10 MP3 codec in Virtualdub. |

The Fraunhofer profesisonal MP3 ACM use the default option for faster encoding, but may cause lower quality, This CLI app http://nyaochi.sakura.ne.jp/xoops/modules/...php?cid=1&lid=1 will invoke the high quality encoding option(but the author of this software say the high quality option have some annoiying bug , and very slow encodind speed, ~5x @ P4 2.4GHz...) |

Microsoft now distribute the professional version of the Fraunhofer IIS mp3 codec (L3CODECP.ACM) in the installation package for Windows Media Player 10, without charge to the end-user, having licenced it from Fraunhofer.
The professional version encodes to bit rates higher than L3CODECA.ACM, the crippled version which originally shipped with Windows 9x.
Although Windows Media Player 10 will not run under Windows 9x or ME, the L3CODECP.ACM codec has no such limitation. It works perfectly under Win9x and ME.
Microsoft are licenced to redistribute L3CODECP.ACM and it is available from the following Windows Media Player download page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...n&qstechnology=
The download link (which provides a file that can be opened by WinZip to extract the L3CODECP.ACM file) is:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/2...7/MP10Setup.exe
Copy the file L3CODECP.ACM to C:\Windows\System (in Win 9x/ME).
In Windows 9x and ME (and perhaps also 2K), to install the codec use a text editor to open SYSTEM.INI (located at C:\WINDOWS\system.ini) and ADD the following line in the [drivers32] section:
msacm.l3acm=L3CODECP.ACM
Only one l3acm entry can be present in [drivers32], so you must REMOVE the following line from the [drivers32] section:
msacm.l3acm=L3CODECA.ACM
Note:- The commonest cause of problems with the L3CODECP.ACM file is the presence of other l3acm entries in SYSTEM.INI so you must remove *all* other instances of the "msacm.l3acm=" line. Other programs (for example Winamp) add an instance of this line, but the codec Winamp installs must be deleted from SYSTEM.INI if you want to use L3CODECP.ACM
There are no changes to make in the Windows Registry for Win 9x / ME as these versions of Windows look for audio codecs *only* in SYSTEM.INI - and it is very important that you do NOT enter the file into the Windows Registry as that can cause a problem (it causes a driver conflict that will make this codec unavailable on your system).
If you are having problems, search your Registry (using regedit.exe) for any references to L3CODECA.ACM or L3CODECP.ACM and delete any references found.
Backup your registry before making any changes to it. |
