Hi
I'm trying to set up a batch file that will automatically compress files using DivX or Xvid after the video has been recorded (this is being used for TV show recording).
The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to set up the command line batch file to have it use the DivX or Xvid settings to compress. It seems that is only possible to do in the actual VirtualDub program itself. Saving a .vcf file does not save the compression settings!
So how do I save the compression settings and put it to use in my batch file?
Secondly, using /p, how can I make it select ALL files in a folder, rather than having to select only one every time?

The .vcf file does contain the compression settings. They're encoded in a big string in the SetCompData() call.
To process a directory, use /b instead of /p.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
How come my settings are not being saved when I make the vcf file, then? It appears that it is using some other compression settings and not the ones I chose when I saved the file. |

Are you using vista or win7, have uac turned on and are saving the vcf to somewhere different than your documents folder ?

I'm on Windows 7. Virtual Dub is in a folder on my desktop and I am saving my vcf files directly to my desktop, not in the same folder. I have UAC turned off.
On a separate note, every time I try to compress a file with Xvid or DivX, the finished file is like always 2x larger than the original file. I don't know what the hell is going on. Audio is set to mp3, and I am setting the video compression at like 400-500 bitrate.
What am I doing wrong? |

Hard to say without more info
What's the file information say in virtualdub about the origional and the finished versions?
If you liked, on win7 you could use it's problem recorded to give a walkthrough of the steps you follow
Type "record" (without quotes) in the start menu's search box, on the list you should find "record steps to reproduce a problem", record what you do, then upload the file to somewhere like multiupload.com, and post the link to the recording here

Cool didn't know about that feature. OK I recorded it and on the page you can see the file size of the original and the projected file size of the "compressed".

Yeah, it's pretty well hidden for being so useful

I can see from the recording, that you missed picking a bitrate
After selection the mp3 codec, you MUST pick one of the bitrate items that appear on the right hand side
Otherwise you'll end up with pcm audio (uncompressed) instead which is much larger
You can check with a finished file, by opening it in virtualdub, and then checking the file information on the file menu
You might want to try the lame mp3 encoder (link is in my sig), it's generally considered as a good one

Working with UAC turned off can cause weird behaviours in some cases.

I have several audio editing tools (Goldwave, Cooledit pro etc) and they always complain about Lame being installed on my system when I run them (Warning: known to cause errors) and I have to uninstall it or I can't save in MP3 format.
32-Bit Windows XP Pro SP3.

Um, are you by chance a 'problem power user' ?
No offence meant, but there's a certain type of person that always seems to have strange and bizarre problems
When I go over to fix their pc's you can usually spot the warning signs
Lots and lots of micro-management 'utilities'
Registry cleaners, speedup tools, system optimizers, more defraggers than you can shake a stick at, process monitoring and 'tweaking' tools (like process lasso)
99% of the time the problem is with what they are doing or have done with these tools
(There's a tool on microsoft's site for forcing OS version numbers for apps - it's meant for developers to check backwards/forwards compatibility, but some enthusiastic people have downloaded it and found new and exiting ways to screw up their apps)
What I'm trying to say is, *possibly*, as you seem to be having so many extremely strange problems, *perhaps* you might be doing/have done something that's the cause?
You could try installing xp into a virtual machine, and see if the problems persist - then you'd know if it's just your pc, and time for a re-install, or a more general problem
See, the reason I suspect it's your pc is that the problems are so bizarre, even down to which specific versions of virtualdub work - even when there has been no changes (in the versions) to do with what you're having problems with
