I have been using VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod to extract wav files from avi for a while now. I followed this steps below in VirtualDub for many video files and they turn out alright. 1)Open Video file 2)Go to "Audio" tab 3)Set to "Full Processing Mode" 4)Go to File, select Save as wav
A few AVI files proved to be a problem recently. At first I would have the error "No audio decompressor found (tag0x0055)". I have tried installing LAME MP3 encoder and AC3ACM decompressor as recommended by many but still to no avail. The latest error i got is "Error initializing audio stream decompression, The requested conversion is not possible, Check to make sure you have the right codec"
I have even use GSPOT to check on what audio file it was.(MPEG Layer-1 audio) I tried also TMPGENc to convert the file directly to mpeg but when I selected the video file there was no audio file detected along with it. I am using Win2k OS.
Is there any way to extract the wav file from this kind of avi files?? If there is, please advise me....
Thanks |

Tag 0x0055 is MP3 (MPEG-1 layer III) audio, not MPEG layer I. The usual cause for this error is an AVI file whose audio stream was encoded by a codec other than the standard Fraunhofer MP3 ACM codec -- for some reason that codec will not decode some MP3 profiles that the DirectShow decoder will.
Fortunately, there is a workaround.
Set the audio mode to Direct, and write out a WAV file. This WAV file will still be compressed in MP3. These files will be recognized by MP3 players as such, so you can use WinAmp and its Disk Writer output mode to write out an uncompressed (PCM) WAV file from it, which can then be spliced back into VirtualDub using Audio > WAV Audio. |

For several months I've been using VirtualDub for creating XVID + LAME_MP3 versions of series trailers captured from TV. Then _after_ compressing to xvid I used to edit them (merge two trailers etc.) for various reasons. Unfortunatelly I had a HDD crash few days ago and had to buy a new one and reinstall Windows 98 + all the programs, including VirtualDub. Unfortunatelly, since then, I've been having some problems with opening the trailers which were editable before system crashdown. Every attempt to play any of these files under virtualdub results in getting error message mentioned above in the first post of this topic. What possibly could go wrong? I'm pretty sure that before reinstalling my system they were fully accessible in VirtualDub! |

I have no problems with opening the same file on my notebook (I have there the same version of VirtualDub 1.5.10 build 18160/release and xvid 1.0.1). |

My guess is that the Lame codec is what causes all the problems in the first place. I have no problems with files that were compressed using the Fraunhofer codec to compress MP3 but have had alot of problems with files that use the Lame codec.
I would also guess that most people who are compressing files using the Lame codec are also compressing VBR MP3 into their files. Since I don't use the Lame codec, I don't know if it's possible using VDub but I've seen alot of VBR MP3 XviD AVIs coming off the internet lately. |

Well, Lame ACM is known, to crash at various systems and to work on other almost identical setups.
For very good reasons, certain programs should not be mentioned on this and other 'adult forums'.
If the Lords of this forum will close both eyes this time, I'd recommend you look for a radioactive metallic chemical element, its atomic number is 88, and its atomic weight is 226.025.
May all the nine Dooms are with you! |

I tried your suggestion and it works... Thanks
I also noticed that quite a number of avi files have been encoded with the LAME codec recently. I installed the LAME codec for VirtualDub and sometimes the program hangs. Anyone knows what is the problem for this??
