Hi,

i have two PCs, one in 32bits, the second in 64bits.
In the 64bits I have installed both VD 32 and 64bits, but in some cases it is not working with some codec or directshow filter.
So my question: can I install, in term of codec, 32 or 64bits and it will work or has it an impact? If there is an impact is it possible to install both 32 and 64bits version of a codec on the same PC?

Thank you for your support

64bit os can use 32bit or 64bit virtualdub
32bit virtualdub requires 32bit plugins/codecs
64bit virtualdub requires 64bit plugins/codecs
You can install 32 and 64bit versions of codecs on a 64bit os

Hi,

In the continuity of my testing of 32 vs 64 bits, I have done the following:

OS: Seven 64
Installed:
- FFDshow 32 AND 64
- Directshow filter 32 AND 64
- DIVX 10.1.1 (not the 10.2 where the codec has disappeared)

then I have the following issue:
- VD32: When I open a MP4 file, I got the message "unable to create source filter hr=80040240": what is the meaning?

- VD64: In compression window, I don't see the DIVX codec: Is it because it is only 32bits codec?

thank you

DivX's vfw codec is 32bit only
XVid is a codec of the same type that has 32 and 64bit versions

I'm assuming you're trying to open the mp4 file by selecting the directshow plugin?
Have you installed a directshow splitter? eg Haali or LAV splitters
Turned on the required codecs in ffdshows config pages?
Particular codecs for directshow can be chosen using the codec chooser in my sig
Directshow problems can be diagnosed with GraphStudioNext 32 and 64bit versions

XVid
Haali
LAVFilters
GraphStudioNext

As a further note:
Your problem reports are very incomplete and require guess work, and who knows if we're guessing correctly
It's better to give too much information, step by step descriptions
After you're written it, read it back and imagine you don't know anything other than what is written

Detailed description of what I have done:
1/ First, I have installed matroska splitter (an old version as at my office I don't have access to your links): 1.10.275.0
It seems to be a 64bits version

2/ I have also installed LAV splitter, both 32 and 64 bits. It seems to be installed as I can see it in graphedit, list of graph.

3/ So I have opened my file with graphedit 64, and I have get the following, working well (yuppi):
"File MP4" Video pin out => Video in "Microsoft DTV-DVD video decoder" video pin out => VMR input "video rendere"
Audio pin out => audio pin in "Microsoft DTV-DVD audio decoder" audio pin out => audio pin in "default direct sound device"

4/ I have so removed haali because LAV seems better
In this case it is no more working. Graphedit says "VFW_E_UNKNOWN_FILE_TYPE".
I have tried to build something manually, but in fact I have not found anything allowing to represent the MP4 file, as the LAV splitter is waiting for an intput (in opposite to haali splitter).
And of course it is not working under VD64

5/ I have tried the same with the graphedit32 and of course I get directly the same result as for the point 4 as the Haali is 64 bits and LAV does not seem to work

So what is missing in my configuration to work if I want to use LAV (which again seems to be more "clean" that Haali)?

Thank you
Rmanal

1) could have sworn it's both 64/32bit

3) use the codec chooser to change the decoder from microsofts one

4) reinstall lav, uninstalling haali probably removed the splitter reg entry - lav splits mp4's fine

Reading the info on http://haali.su/mkv/ , a 64-bit version has been add on 19/12/2009.

Myself I have a Windows 7 Home Edition 32-bit and the Haali splitter is working correctly.
So, the version of the Haali splitter that is installed on my computer, can be nothing else then a 32-bit.

I suppose the "Haali/Matroska splitter"-installer decides itself which version (32- or 64-bit) to install ...
Should it be that you get the choice when you have a 64-bit Windows ?

For Windows Media Player, a splitter (like Haali or LAV) is necessary to be able to play MKV-files,
a splitter (like FLV or LAV splitter) is needed to play FLV-files.
For playing MP4 and MOV a splitter seems to NOT be needed.

In VirtualDub a splitter is needed for opening FLV-, MKV-, MOV- and MP4-files via the DirectShow plugin.
In VirtualDub a splitter is NOT needed for opening MKV-files via fccHandlers Matroska plugin or FFMPeg plugin, and for opening MOV- or MP4-files via the QuickTime plugin or FFMPeg plugin.

I've checked these things out by first un-installing the Haali splitter and FLV splitter.
LAV-splitters are not installed at all.

Regards.

Thank you for your support.
In fact the story comes very strange:
- I have completly removed Haali, and then just reinstall the splitter of LAV 32 and 64, by using the install_splitter.bat cmd file.
- I have so tried again to open my MP4 file under graph edit: same error.
- I have so used the previous graph, working with Haali splitter, and finally found the one for LAV allowing to open a file: then it has worked in both 32 and 64 bits!!!

So why graphedit does not want to use automatically the LAV splitter? Is there an option to do that that I can check?

Dloneranger: I have not understood what do you mean by: 3) use the codec chooser to change the decoder from microsofts one

Install LAV with a .bat file - gosh that's a really old one then...... I'd try to get the newest one if possible - if your company blocks that domain, get it at home and email it to work?

DirectShow can have many codecs that understand a given format
They used (xp, vista) to use a 'merit' system where each codec had a merit number, and the one with the largest number was chosen
You could change the merit with programs like gspot or many others to get windows to use the one you preferred
From Win7 onwards they use a different system but the principles the same, download the codec chooser in my sig and it'll let you pick which decoder you want to use
(the default MS ones don't work with everything)

Thank you Dloneranger, I have finally found the issue.
This f*** haali put them as prefered filter. When you remove it, it does not modify this and then the prefered splitter point to a register key no more existing, leading to not use LAV filter.
I have modified it with codecTweakTool and now it works fine, using LAV filter, for both 32 and 64 bits.

Pfff, it was a long story and it is a pity to see how many ambush we can face when trying to remove/replace some directshow filter.
Graphedit and codectweaktool are very usefull. And clearly people like you are very usefull also, and I would like to thank you again for the community. You spend part of your time to help freely other people, even noob like me: I really appreciate that.

I will try also your codec chooser, if it is not the same.
