When it say missing codec it means that it has opened the file correctly but it miss the codec to decompress the video.
For "avc1" you need:
ffdshow VFW interface (yellow icon) => Decoder => Codecs => H.264/AVC => libavcodec
or
x264vfw
PS: ffdshow-tryouts is essential for almost everything.

I did as you suggest, and configured as you specified (I appreciate it) with ffdshow-tryouts.
No change, however.
ffdshow-tryouts loaded, and I double checked the settings. I am still getting the AVC1 error, MKV files are still loading up as black boxes with "Missing Codec". Isn't ffshow-tryouts is supposed to fix this?
Trying x264vfw.

-------------------
UPDATE: Nope - no difference with x264vfw loaded.
This is getting frustrating. Am I missing a proper plugion or something? Do I have too many plugins or codecs loaded? Is ffdshow-tryouts the only codec pack I'm supposed to have installed on my machine (is it supposed to handle everything out there in place of any other codec I might have installed on my machine)?
Is there a way to force VirtualDub to use a specific codec? It just seems like I'm relying on VirtualDub to figure things out on its own and it looks like it's not very good at it.

Pay attention, you shouldn't go in the video configuration (red icon) but the vfw configuration (yellow icon). Also try with both 32-bit and 64-bit VirtualDub.
If it still doesn't work, try to post a file (possible small) where the problem happen.

That's exactly what I've done - I have never gone into the red icon, never touched it. That's why I'm so puzzled.
What type of file is it that you want me to post?
DISCOVERY (thanks to your advice):
Things appear to work with the 32-bit version, which leads me to believe that there's something "32-bit" going on under the hood somewhere that VirtualDub is puking on. But I REALLY want to use the 64-bit version due to the file sizes I'm working with.

This simply mean that you have only installed the 32-bit versions of ffdshow-tryouts / x264vfw and not the 64-bit versions.

I have Virtualdub 32bit version 1.9.11 . I installed Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow tryouts. I downloaded the DShowInputdriver-0.92 and placed the release folder in the plugins folder inside the Virtualdub program folder.
I open Virtualdub, select open video file, select all files, choose a m2ts file then look through the Files of type drop down menu and no DShowInputDriver option is listed. And of course if I click open, Virtualdub tells me its an unsupported format.
What have I done wrong? |

Hello,
I've already managed to set up DShowInputDrive and ffdshow. I also have the Matroska, QuickTime, and WMV codecs. After setting all that up, I was able to successfully load mp4's and wmv's. Unfortunately, for mp4's, I encountered a missing sound compressor error. After some research, found oout about the AAC ACM codec, but when I try to install it, I get this error "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation." I don't know what I'm supposed to do now.
Additionally, when I try to load WMV's, I get "missing codec". Looking under file information, I get this, which I have no idea what the information means. http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/3540/wmvplugin.png
I'm using Virtual Dub 32-Bit on a Windows 7 64-Bit. Any advice on what I should to get my videos working and audio playing would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ruzu
P.S. I have been using Cyberlink PowerDirector 10 for a while now, but have found Virtual Dub to provide incredibly superior smooth editing abilities. I now just use PowerDirector to boost the quality of any videos cut with Virtual Dub. What I've found amazing is how you can move the slider back and forth with no 'lag'. I've been able to view some of my most favorite videos in perfect slow-mo detail ;]
Edit: I'm fine with the AVI files I get through FRAPS and Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, but, I'd like to still be able to edit the typical mp4 and wmv files through Virtual Dub. However, if I try to convert a file to avi through download helper, Virtual Dub rejects it, so, no clue there. Additionally, if I try to edit files I've converted through DiVx(Which I've long sinced uninstalled, that works too, but, there is a lot of video distortion. |

FLV and QuickTime inputdrivers depend on extra software like ffdshow for video-decoding and ACM-codecs for audio-decoding. (ffdshow settings : Video for Windows configuration)
DirectShow inputdriver plugins depends on ffdshow for video as well as for audio. (ffdshow settings : Video decoder configuration AND Audio decoder configuration)
WMV inputdriver plugin depends on the installation of the WMV-videocodec AND WMA-audiocodec: > http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/de...ils.aspx?id=507 (do not know if it will still install in Windows 7) > http://codecguide.com/windows_media_codecs.htm
An inputdriver plugin that makes it possible to open (almost) any kind of videofile and works independently is: FFMPeg inputdriver plugin (available in 32-bit and 64-bit): > http://code.google.com/p/ffinputdriver/downloads/list
So why not try once this last one... |

Thanks a lot Abrazo! That last link solved the mp4 and wmv issues for me. The only pain in the arse is that I have to manually load the files from the open file dialog. Still, it works so I thank you! |

Hi.. I need to split a few *.mp4 files.. if somebody help me out will be great. Anyway.. I try to read previous post here and Im lost.. really. Ive install matroska spiltter.. and other files.. and nothing. With *.avi was simple.. open files/set compression/split end of story.. with *.mp4 - black magic so far to me. BTW I use VirtualDub-1.10.0-AMD64.
one more thing.. if somebody want to ban me instead for such stupid question, I have one thing to justify this. I just saw my butcher .. yy.. I mean dentist today.. still bleeding (me not a dentist) and my brain is still under strong painkiller. regards |

Not easily better have a look here http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/vi...de-multiplexers to find a tool that can demux mp4. This said as depends what the mp4 container contains. Where many virtualdub video load plugins will not allow direct stream copy of raw video. When virtualdub cannot load the file to work with and need to use plugins
If can load and play the mp4 with virtualdub then select video and audio for direct stream copy then File > Export video accept any options as is and save with .m4v extension. Check what your audio format is from File > File Information and save the audio with extension for your audio format .mp3, .mp2 or .ac3 for examples |

Kinda lost as well... javascript:emoticon(':(') It looks to me I have everything in place (Windows 8 OS):
Codec pack stuff: http://i40.tinypic.com/1fe7hg.jpg http://i39.tinypic.com/143fdzq.jpg
When loading a video of type WMV: http://i40.tinypic.com/2vinkax.jpg
Result: Missing codec and when I look in file info: http://i40.tinypic.com/1ze9k47.jpg
When I download and add that plugindriver to the plugindir it still doesn't work. |
