I have strong computer skills but am extremely media unsavvy.

From what I've read on the stickies I'm kind of getting the impression that an .avi file can contain a video stream that is encoded in something else, like a DivX codec?

What's the difference between an .avi file and a .DivX file, and am I correct saying an .avi can have a DivX video stream??? If so, what player do you use to watch it?

BTW Windows Movie Maker/Media player not an option for me...they're not "free" because Windows was. :-P

All I'm really trying to do is take my Fraps from World of Warcraft and compress them (but still at a very high quality so you can see in detail what's going on) and then upload them to a file sharing thing, not youtube (too low quality).

What I did was set video options for compression to a divx codec I downloaded and put into virtualdub. I wanted to save as a .divx file, but it seems that VD can't do that and, in retrospect, doesn't need to. I clicked "Save as .avi" and then clicked "All file types" and then named it xxx.Divx It would play in my divx player so I thought it worked, but when my friends downloaded it from

http://www.filedropper.com/yoggclosekill2

they couldn't all get it to work. A few did, I think some renamed it .avi though.

The best possible answer to my questions would just be a link to a tutorial for turning FRAPS into other formats with a basic discussion of what options to use.

Thanks,

Garicasha

That's correct. AVI is a container (a 'wrapper') that lets you combine video and audio streams so they can play together.

.divx is a private extension to the avi format made by DivX. And you are correct.

Any respectable player should be able to. If you want a free MS independent alternative you can look into VLC.

If you are strong on computer skills you should know that changing the extension of a file doesn't change the file itself. You just have a wrongly named file now, which players may or may not still recognize. What VirtualDub saves is avi, not .divx.

Just keep the extension .avi and you would already have been finished.

As above. Also... look at this.

Question is:
- where they try play this file (used DirectShow based player on PC or on standalone DVD/DivX player)
- and what is exactly reason they can't play...

For example... look at guides on videohelp.com and digital-digest.com.

BTW
You not 'compress' audio.
There is 88,9 MB uncompressed PCM - can be 8 MB MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) with 128 kbps.

BTW
What settings you have used in DivX config, also what profile?

Ok, thanks for the really good answers.

Any recommendations for other codecs, or is saving as an .avi with a DivX codec going to be the easiest way of compressing and sharing my video?

Also...if I want to put stuff on youtube should I compess it first, or will it lose too much quality when they re-compress it?

Use MPEG-4 ASP codec (DivX or Xvid) is sufficient.

MPEG-4 AVC (x264 for example) is worth to using, but rather in MP4 container and not using VD and not for standalone DVD/DivX players.
