Ok, so I started using this codec x264vfw and i am seeing good results so far. The one thing I am not a big fan though is seeking in virtualdub. Any reason for this? Is this codec heavy in temperal compression? I changed the keyframes to 10 and it still did not help. Any comments are welcome or even a better method of compressing to 264.

Hmmm, I just tested with http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/ (is this the encode you mean??)

Seeking was fine

What's the decoder listed in the file information ?

I always attributed this to the beefiness of x264 in general. If I am wrong about this then I will be corrected.

I have a moderately fast computer and sometimes seek times can go to about 10 seconds when seeking to a frame in an x264 video in Vdub.

dry.gif I'm not seeing times like that at all, it's pretty much the same as seeing in divx/xvid etc (slower than snapping to keyframes, but only just)

Ok, I tried in windows 7 64 and windows xp with the same results. I even forced keyframes every 10 and no help. Core i7 running at 3.1GHz, 6 Gig of Ram, 7200RPM WD 32MB buffer, Geforce 275, Asus P6T. What gives?

Is it the settings in vdub?

Maybe you missed the questions above
So I'll repeat them
QUOTE

What's the decoder listed in the file information ?

Here's a few more...

Is there any information you could show...frames sizes, fps etc
Then I could compare a similar file
Or do you have a short sample that shows the problem

Is seeking any faster if you open the file with the directshow plugin?

Are you using the 32 or 64 bit version of virtualdub?

There isn't a 'make seeks faster' checkbox in virtualdub

If you download this test avi http://www.rapidshare.com/files/416690398/Test3.avi (3Mb)

Load into virtualdub
Press the go to end button
Press the backwards button once (takes you to a keyframe, should be immediate)
Time the next step
Press the backwards button again (takes you to keyframe+202)

Here, that takes just under 2 seconds on a £62 cpu (amd athlon II x3 440)
Yours should be faster than that

Changing the decoder to ffdshow gives me a time of about 1 second
Using directshow plugin gives about 1 second also

Loading the avi in and just going to frame 10 is immediate

Sorry,
I forgot to answer some questions.
Yes, I am using that codec from sourceforge.

The frame rate is 30 at 1280x720.
I cant seem to get a file information report since I have to use a directshow driver.

My files are huge so let me edit one to a shorter length as an example.
brb

lol

I meant info/decoder for the video you have finished encoded using x264 - that should be an avi that doesn't need to be loaded with directshow plugin

If it's using the directshow plugin, you can use graphedit to see what codecs etc are being used
You might be using a bad/slow codec

With Win 7, you might want to look at http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Win7D...er/1262732488/1

Ok, I downloaded the program and now I can open them up without a directshow driver which helps a lot.
Thanks, this is a great tool.
The seeking is still slow.

Here is a sample of the file
http://www.evropej.com/CIMG4232.avi
15 megs

Any suggestions on the settings in the codec?

Oh, the seeking on your file is ten times better. So what are you doing differently?

That's what I'm trying to figure out :-)

I can pick between ffdshow, coreavc and x264 as the vfw decode - shown in file-information

All work at roughly the same speed, but I don't know which codec you're using for decoding

(downloading your test now)

Hmmm, your test clip takes about 2 secs to jump to the last frame

In the codec settings, I have zero latency checked and virtual dub hack as well.
I dont get it?

Let me reload windows xp and see if the results are also the same...
