I am not able to open up a lot of programs nor install them. I'm getting errors such as : "The application has failed to initialize properly. Click OK to terminate the application." Nothing installs neither.

I'm hoping there's a fix to this. I have things set up and I don't really want to reformat the disk.

Looks like I had to reinstall the MS C++ runtime files. I now have 3 copies of the 2005 redist and one 2010 redist showing in add/remove. Is this normal? I had to install one after the other to get my system back to where it kind of was.

The file sizes are different for each copy, 3 - 2005's and the 2010 so it must be ok but it feels awkward to see multiples in there.

I think one of the 2005 redists is 2008 because I did install that one too.

Yup - quite normal
In fact I'm surprised there's so few of them

Oh wow! I had no idea. Could had sworn I installed the 2008 version but yet I don't see it in the panel. Does it matter that 2008 doesn't show or should I try reinstalling that one again?

MS says that each pack is accumulative. In that case I should only need 2010 then?

No, the updates in each set are cumulative but the sets are separate
By set, I mean 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010 (plus any I've missed)

OK so I don't need the 2008 you mean? Yet I think I have it but it is reading as 2005.

If an app needs 2005 then you'll have to get it

All the redistributables are here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/searc...e&p=1&r=10&t=82

Once they're installed though, windows update should keep them up to date
(you might have to tick a box on it that says 'update other programs' though, can't remember the xp name for it offhand)
