What causes either an icon or a folder to create a ghost image after dragging either one to another location? It's as if they get visually stuck.

Example:

This has happened many times before and sometimes I can drag back and not release the folder or I have to reboot to get rid of the ghost. Is there another way to refresh windows to rid of these ghost created icons/folders without rebooting?

Weird. Probably the best way is to try to perturb the window from which you originally started the drag, as that would be in control of the drag image.

The stuck folder image lasted for a few hours that night. I had left the computer for a little while to tend some an errand, came back and it was gone.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the showing of folder/icon contents while dragging. I went into system settings then under the performance section and unchecked the option to show contents while dragging.
