I want to share how well VirtualDub and Vegas MS HD Platinum works together.
You can see VirtualDub as a preprocessor to MS.
Since Deshaker works better for my files than stabilization in MS, I use VirtualDub with Deshaker.
I also prefer crop and cuttings in VirtualDub.

After saving as .avi files from VirtualDub, I can put together several HD .avi clips in MS to add titles, music or other things.

Rendering the movie with the right settings is very fast, since only frames which has been changed or added in MS will be rendered. The other frames are just copied.

Regards

Does this work the same way in Vegas pro 9? Like if I save out to Xvid before Vegas; Vegas will do this direct stream copy behavior on only the changed parts?

If this is the true then this could be an alternate way of working with files in my case.

My concern is that of simple and short crossfades between cuts in Vegas. Would this direct stream copy behavior apply in this case?

No rendering until crossfaded parts appears.
If two clips are overlapping, first part will be copied, second part will be rendered.
I guess in that case, that keyframes are affected.
With only fades in each end of the clips, part after fade will be copied.

Transitions, fades, titles and such things are rendered since the original file is affected.

My procedure is following:
.mp4 (frame rate 30) into VirtualDub for deshaking. 1920x1080p or 1280x960.
Sometimes I cut to 1280x720 or other sizes in multiples of 16
Saving with xvid 1.3.2 with setting: HD 1080

1 Opening i Movie Studio of one or more clips.
2 Adding music and titles mostly.
3 "Make a movie."
4 Chose Video for windows .avi, HD-1080-60i YUV as template.
5 Choose Video format xvid MPEG-4 codec
6 Chose Custom frame size and type your frame format.
Render

Rendering will now be done on changed parts and the rest will be copied.

Regards

Thanks asaleo. I'm going to try this as my new routine. It's been a struggle trying to nail one down.
