Extracting Audio From An Avi File (audio Only), VirtualDub refuses to open it

When I try to open an AVI with only audio stream, VirtualDub says something like "there isn´t a video strem in this file" and do not open it.

I´ve already used AviUtil to solve this problem.

But, i was wondering, why can´t VirtualDub open a audio only stream AVI file?
