Hi fcchandler,

I've just downloaded and tried your VirtualDub.mpeg2 1.5.4. I wanted to convert the SVCD .dat file into DivX. Orginal VirtualDub gave some error message when I tried to open the file. After parsing the screen ratio has changed. All faces look very prolonged. Am I missing something before open the .dat file in VirtualDub or do I have to use some filter afterwards to correct the screen/pixel ratio ?

Cheers
Hai

You're not missing anything; SVCDs really do look like that. The player resizes them when you play them, but VirtualDub shows you the true frames. To fix it, use the resize filter to convert it to a 4:3 aspect ratio (height = 0.75 * width).

Not sure if this is something I'm doing, a known issue (though I didn't see this in the thread), or a combination of both.

Just DL'd the latest version and installed it. Pulled in an MPEG-2 file and used my normal settings (full processing mode for audio, deinterlace, smoother, MS MPEG 4 V2) to create an AVI.

When I ran the AVI back, however, the audio went from matched to out of sync within the first two minutes.

Is there something simple I've misunderstood, or a suggested workaround, or...

Thanks,
Ewan

It's common for VOBs to be out of sync in my mod, which is the main reason I don't recommend using it to rip DVDs. But if you have out of sync MPEGs which are not DVD VOBs, then you may be experiencing the same problem described in this thread.

But if you have out of sync MPEGs which are not DVD VOBs, then you may be experiencing the same problem described in this thread.

The problem I'm having are with MPEG-2 files generated from captures using a Hauppauge WinTV card at Full D1 4000 bit rate. I can play the original which stays in sync. I can do edits using their included nanocosmos tool and the audio and video stay in sync.

However, their tool has no ability to apply filters or do any of the more sophisticated work that VDub allows. It also leaves the file as an MPEG-2, which I feel is less desirable for archiving work - since I'll run into the same conversion problems and editing problems down the road if I ever want to use a different format, etc.

From the thread you pointed me to, it looks like I should try initially just converting the file with no edits or filters, and then see if the file stays in sync. That's an extra step I would prefer not to take, but I'll at least give it a try and see what happens. If you have any other ideas or suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thanks,
Ewan

Well, I tried not editing the file at all and simply converting, and I even tried using the Direct Stream Copy option. In both cases the audio and video start out in sync, but quickly get out of sync.

Using ArcSoft's "ShowBiz" I can convert the same file without any sync problem. So I know it can be done. Question is what is ShowBiz doing that VDub-MPEG isn't?

Any help/advice appreciated,
Ewan

I don't know. It could keep in sync using the embedded timestamps (unlike VirtualDub), or it could just use DirectShow (like TMPGEnc). Have you tried changing the frame rate in VirtualDub? If over time the audio is sounding earlier than the video, increase the frame rate a bit, otherwise decrease it. You might get lucky.

If that fails there are still other ways to get MPEG-2 into VirtualDub besides my mod. DVD2AVI for instance, and/or Avisynth.

I uploaded a copy here especially for you. Please let me know when you get it, so I can delete it. (I have very limited web space.)

I have it now.
Thank you very much for your help.
I will be sure to make a back up of this version.
This version by far works the best for me when it comes to audio and video sync

Can anyone tell me where to find a guide on how to use VirtualDubMPEG2.
I cannot find any MPEG2 under the compression codecs. How is this MPEG2 implemented in VirtualDub?

It all works exactly the same as the original VirtualDub. The only significant difference is that this version can read (but not write) MPEG-2 files, while the original can only read MPEG-1 files.
