Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > VirtualDub Filters and Filter Development > High Contrast Area Smoothing?

Hi all!

I need to find out a way to smoothen digitally generated video to interpolate the edges of objects. The way I am thinking it would be a filter that first makes an edge detection and then smoothes to those areas only, preferrably with options if the smoothing should be applied to the lighter or darker side. Like an unsharp mask that looks for contrast areas but instead of enhancing the contrast it applies interpolation on one or both sides.

I have downloaded tons of smootheners and interpolators but none of them seem to work on my video material, as usually edges are tried to be preserved by smoothener filters. Also, on this material the contents of the objects are with complex information that are ruined by generic blurring of the entire image.

Is there any way that this could be done in VirtualDub?

Thanks in advance for any help or comments
Mkn.

MSharpen can detect edges and sharpen them - but itīs only best with cartoons. Worth a try, though.

Smart Smoother (HiQ) will be good for smoothing - it tries to preserve the edges quite well.

Try Smart Smoother as well as the Hi-Quality version - as well as Smart Smoother IQ, if Luma is OK, and only the color needs smoothing.

If the video is cartoonish, you might want to try Area Smoother as well - itīs made for cartoons.

Thanks, but all versions of Smart Smoother and Area Smoother and MSharpen as well makes the opposite to what I want to do. They preserve the edges and smooth the areas (as that is what is usually needed), but in this case I need to preserve the areas and only smooth the edges.

Have you considered Warp-Sharpen with a low setting? I've found this interesting and have used it sometimes. Not sure if it fits just what you're looking for, but thought I'd suggest it.

Not this far, but I'll look into it.
Thanks! smile.gif
