| Is there any filter that can fix, or at least mitigate a bit, a capture from an old VHS tape where the top part of most (but not all) fields is warped and unstable? Below are two sample I-frames. The first is a good one (to prove that a few actually exist). The second one shows the mangling in progress. It seems like it should be possible for a filter to detect when this is happening and "unwrap" the warped section a bit... or at least make it a little more stable from field to field and less distracting. But so far, I haven't seen anything that seems to address this problem.   |

| I've seen this too with some of my old tapes. I don't know of any software to fix it, but sometimes you can get lucky playing the tape on different VCRs. Once I borrowed a friend's VHS camcorder because I found out that it could play some of my old tapes without the warping! |

Hmmm. You just gave me an idea. The camcorder trick probably worked because it had a low-grade timebase corrector built in. Perhaps it might be possible to emulate a timebase corrector to fix the problem... |

| I hope somebody figures out a for sure fix for this problem. i have several valuable old bootleg concert videos with this very problem that i'm trying to restore. |

| As miamicanes suggested, a time base corrector might fix it, but they ain't cheap. |

Thanks for the tip. Too bad I'm a complete retard when it comes to coding or I'd make it my life's mission to write a software time base corrector filter for virtualdub.  |
