| Hi, I guess this filter is never implemented - please correct me if i'm wrong. When ripping old Beta/VHS tapes, resulting AVI will suffer from black columns and rows surrounding the video. Can anyone implement such a filter automatically detecting these blacks and suggest margins where we do manually using null transform-cropping. Many thanks. |

| Well, yes, you're "wrong" in that it appears you don't know what is actually happening. The black area is probably overscan which is added signal that was/is usually cropped by an analog TV. There are some automatic cropping methods. I haven't ever used them. My preference is to use the null filter to set crop offsets for all four sides then I use Smart Resize to add letterboxing to restore the proper frame sizes WITHOUT resizing. Some people like to use a filter called border control, I think, to set the letterbox to a gradient so there is no harsh change from black to content with the intent of reducing corruption in the encoder for their final result. 480 width is fine for capturing VHS material. Beta is higher quality, right? You might want to capture at 720 width. "rip" is used to indicate a digital-digital copy of the data itself without an analog component. "capture" is digitizing an external signal. Take a look at the doom9 analog capture guide for some good help. |
