Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > Virtualdub Capturing With Ati Theatre Chip

Posted by: mibloem Mar 13 2005, 05:02 PM
Hi, I have a ATI based card using the Rage Theatre capturing chip. The Virtualdub site indicates that the Microsoft wrapper Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32) is supported in Virtualdub to use this chipset.

I am however unable to find the right settings in Virtualdub to make the capture work right.

I am trying the capture a PAL I source at 352x288 direct to divx quality based.

Could someone please help me figure out all the other settings required?

Thanks.

To my knowledge, Virtualdub will not capture from an ATI card.

I have never been able to get it to even with the download that you mentioned.

It's a shame since alot of users have this chipset. I'd look for a different capturing program. You might try using the Catalyst software that came with the card.

huh.gif I have 3 different ATI cards and all of them work fine in VirtualDub.

@mibloem:
It would help if you specified which ATI card you have, your operating system, what VirtualDub settings you're using, and exactly what the problem is. (Just saying "it doesn't work right" isn't enough information to diagnose the problem.)

You will have better results if you use VirtualDub 1.6.x and use the ATI device directly in DirectShow mode rather than going through the Microsoft VFWWDM wrapper, which is what you are currently using. I specifically tested and put in workarounds for the ATI All-in-Wonder in either 1.6.3 or 1.6.4, so it should work.

I have gotten this information from not only this forum, but every other forum I've visited on the subject and even from ATI support.

I'm using a 64MB AIW VE PCI BUS Version with a RAGE Theater Chip on both Windows 98SE and Windows 2000.

The error messages I get are No Capture Driver or No Capture Device.

I'll download the new 1.6.4 version that Phaeron mentioned and see if it helps but IMO, using the TV Tuner in the ATI Catalyst software is alot easier since you can change the channels up and down with your mouse or keyboard or use the remote wonder instead of having to manually change the setting in Virtualdub each time you want to change the channel.

DirectShow video capture support was only added to the 1.6.x experimental tree in the last few months, and there was a bug in video port pin handling that prevented the ATI devices from working in that mode, so the information you got was correct... until now.

The new module also contains support for channel changing -- you can use arrow keys to change the channel, or type the channel number and hit ENTER.

Great. Thanks for the info.

I'll download the new version and give it a try.

Still doesn't work using Windows 2000. I can get to the capture screen (which I couldn't before) but it freezes up with the audio playing and a black screen in the video preview window. I can't click any buttons and when I try and close, I get a "program is not responding" message and when I end the program, the audio is still playing and the only ways to shut it off is to open the ATI TV Tuner and then close or restart the computer.

Well, now I don't get anything. No black screen or bad audio.
Here's a couple of screen shots. Does it only work with a VCR hooked up and not from the ATI TV Tuner?

I guess I can't upload an images either.

When I visited the link to the Dscaler site, it said that the ATI AIW TV Tuner wouldn't work. The screenshots I tried to post had the TV Tuner greyed out under device and No Video Sources under Video Source.

Should work from the TV tuner as well, but capture drivers are finicky. All I can say is that if you managed to get VirtualDub into a bad state where it has saved settings that make the driver or system lock upon entering capture mode, holding down SHIFT will prevent VirtualDub from applying saved settings when you enter capture mode or select a device.

I don't know what the problem is. It is doing the same as before, black screen with audio and frozen up.
I tried the shift key but it still freezes up. I've never set any settings so I don't know what the problem is.
I assume it's just Windows 2000 since everything else doesn't want to work on this OS. Printer, scanner, Internet Explorer, Cox cable modem.

I've reinstalled the OS about 5 or 6 times in the last week and a half but I can't solve certain problems. It all seemed to start when I tried installing an ATI driver update from Windows Update that crapped out in the middle of the install. I ended up buying a new hard drive and DVD writer because I kept getting access errors when trying to use the DVD writer that I didn't have a clue about and everytime I tried to reinstall W2K, it kept telling me my hard drive was currupt or damaged, even after I reformatted it.
