When I delete a selection from the middle or end of video file, the saved .avi shows the change.

This doesn't work when deleting a selection at the beginning of a video file. The change isn't carried over into the saved .avi file.

Unfortunately, using frame 1 instead of frame 0 as a starting point of deletion is not enough.

your cut must cover the whole section till the next keyframe. you cant have avi start (or any other container for that matter, not really anyway) at a non-keyframe.

My video sample had a keyframe at every 300 frames.
I was able to remove last 20 frames from the video and save the changes. How is that possible, if it wasn't on the keyframe?

After a keyframe, you can cut off as many frames as you want, 20, 30, 40, 50 , 100, etc. .. In any case, Virtualdub will make sure that every new AVI segment that is the result of editing will start on a keyframe, thats the whole trick .....

You can cut wherever you want if you recompress the video.

I'll keep this in mind to avoid getting into similar trouble.
If I'll have any choice, that is.
