| Every time i try to open an .avi file in virtualdub i get an error message saying, "couldn't locate decompressor for format 'mpg4' (microsoft high-Speed MPEG-4) VirtualDub requires a video for Windows (vfw) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable." i have downloaded the microsoft codec (which i didn't think would work, and subsequently didn't) and i have the divx 5 codec. what do i need to get/do. thanks |

| 'MPG4' is Microsoft MPEG-4 version 1, which you don't seem to have. Try installing the http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.asp from Microsoft's web site. This package includes ALL of Microsoft's MPEG-4 codecs (that I know of). Hope this helps.

It's been years since I've installed Win98SE, but I don't remember any of Microsoft's MPEG-4 codecs being installed by default. I think these codecs appear after upgrades of Media Player and/or DirectX and/or DirectShow from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm. But the Codecs Download Package is a sure-fire fix for any missing MS MPEG-4 codecs. |
