Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > Codec Problem

Hello!
I am a total beginner and haven't a clue about video editing.
Anyway, I have installed Video Dub no problem but when I try to open a file in the program
I get an error window :

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unknown)VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."[COLOR=blue]

I would really appreciate any advice to help me get going.

Been messing about with it and now getting "Missing Codec".

Any ideas?

By default, vdub does not support that file format. You have get the input filters for mp4 files.

http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=19488

or you can use my vdub configuration which has those and a heck of lot more filters already installed

When you open the file, make sure you select the correct extension from the pulldown menu.
Enjoy

- - - A little bit late with may answer, but maybe it can still help - - -

A video- or movie-file mostly has a video-part (with the images or frames) and an audio-part (with the sound).

Both of them (video and audio) are 'compressed' with a certain 'codec' (= coder/decoder) and stored in a certain 'container-format' (like AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, ...).

VirtualDub is normally able to open AVI files when the codecs, that were used to make the movie, are installed and available on your pc.
If not, you need to download and install them.

For video, in most of the cases you will need x264, Xvid or DivX codecs:
- x264 : http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/
- Xvid : http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html
- DivX : http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack

For audio, in most of the cases you will need MP3 codec
this codec is normally available on your Windows pc when "Windows Media Player" is installed.
If not:
- http://sourceforge.net/projects/lame/files/

If you want, you can also open non-AVI files with VirtualDub.
Please come back if you need more info about this.

Thank you very much EvropeJ and Abrazo for your replies.

I have downloaded and installed the files from the links you have listed Abrazo...the video ones that is.
I still get 'Missing Codec' when I try to open a .wmv file and the aforementioned error notification when I try
to open an .avi or .mp4 file. I know I am probably doing something stupidly wrong but have no idea what.

You know, I always see this happen and the simplest solution to dealing with media formats is to convert to a format vdub likes. I suggest using external encoder for this and some might not like it because it seems like advertising. Use freemake to convert the file to xvid, its a free program. Here is how it easy it is to convert the file. www.evropej.com/freemake.mp4.

There are other tools you can use to find the codec for each video file, then download the correct input filter, then try to open it on vdub or you can just brute force the issue and convert all of them to a common format with a single tool.

Thank you so much for the time you have spent trying to help me evropej.

I will do what you say but would just like to add that files are now opening but will not play.

Thanks again!!!!!

Make sure you have quicktime installed, this is another popular compression used. Let us know how it works out.
