Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > Xvid Better Quality?

hi, I was wondering how to set up xvid codec under Video -> compression
for best image quality when reencoding

I ask because, when I load some HD dumps of music videos or some short clips
then cut out content I don't want, I do set up high bitrate (sometime even 1000 or 2000 above than original
as I noticed XviD knows to reduce this)

but even then I notice pixelisation on some areas of video or even lower quality of it

are there some specific options that I need to set, except:

Max Quality scrollbar
High Bitrate
and Quality preset: real time

or is there better codec for this job ?

Quality preset realtime is about the worst compromise you can get
It's for capturing mainly, where speed is of the essence not quality
The options on the 'more' button for the presets give better control, generally on those pages (mode search, vhq mode etc) changing to a higher number on the dropdowns gives a better quality or smaller filesize but takes longer to encode
(better quality if you're using a bitrate setting, smaller files if you're using a quantizer setting)

X264vfw gives better quality than XVid for the same bitrate

But, if it's just quality you're after then don't use the bitrate setting, instead, change to using a quantizer setting
In XVid, that by using single pass and picking a target quantizer, 4 is decent, but smaller numbers give a better quality

In x264vfw, the option is called single pass ratefactor based, 25 is a decent quality there

The difference between the two types of compression (bitrate vs quantizer) is that 2 pass bitrate encoding is all about getting the best quality for a specific file size eg fitting 1 cd exactly. Quantizer based is all about getting a specific quality instead, and the filesize may turn out to be large or small depending on how much is going on in the video

hi
thanks for reply !

can you please tell me where (or how) to get that x264vfw codec ?
I only see this on my list of available ones:

I have installed K-Lite and HyperCam (gives techsmith codec - one on list)
