Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > Video Always The Same Length, Besides Different Fp

Posted by: flyingiceman Jul 26 2012, 01:52 PM
Hi,

I didn't see when I searched for it, but I'm trying to make a timelapse movie, but regardless if I leave frames out or change the fps, the video length is always the same, what am I missing.
I set frame rate and decimate by so many frames, and then I save as avi, but regardless what settings it's always the same length. If I have a preview in virtualdub only decimating seems to speed the video up??

thanks for your help
Robert

I'm assuming that this is multiple images from a still camera.
In VirtualDub the default frame rate is 10fps.

In the lower, 'Frame rate conversion' area:
If you 'Decimate', the fps goes down (keeping the original playing time).
If you increase the frame rate, duplicate frames are created (keeping the original playing time).
Normally that's good as it keeps the audio in sync.

If you actually want to remove frames, you can elect to decimate, then File > Export > Image sequence.
Then reload the images.
Since the default rate is 10 fps and if you had 100 images, the running time would be ten seconds.
You can set the frame rate in top 'Source rate adjustment' to whatever you want for playback - 1 fps to show one image per second for example would give a running time of 100 seconds.
