i recorded a video segment in which I speak at the beginning and again at the end. i want to put music in the middle but i can't seem to do that without the music starting at the beginning, over my speaking. how do i change audio sources midway through the video segment?

This is sadly not 'easily' possible with VirtualDub. VD is a socalled linear video editor (vs. not being a non-linear one). It basically means, you can set filters, audiotrack etc. to one video loaded, and apply it. Like the audiostream, you load it and it is put into the video.

You could delay it, but it would leave you without any sound at all at first in the video. You can export the audio (File -> Save WAV) and edit it with some audio programm and reuse it for the video. (Audio -> Audio from another file)

I think the likes of Audacity could handle the audio editing easily.
Drag the avi file into Audacity and it will extract the audio track.
Note the size of the empty bit in the middle (by selecting it ), cut it then paste in your music.
Save as a new file and let VirtualDub load it (audio from another file).
