| Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > How To Open Non-avi Files In Virtualdub? |
| Posted by: stephanV Jun 2 2010, 02:26 PM |
| Here a brief explanation is given of how to use the input plugin system to open some file formats that VirtualDub doesn't handle natively. WMV, M2TS/MTS, MP4 and Matroska (and potentially many other types) via DirectShow Requirements: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=15093 (place this in .\VirtualDub\plugins\) http://haali.su/mkv/ (for MP4, M2TS/MTS and Matroska) http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/ (for MP4, M2TS/MTS and Matroska) All you have to do is simply open the file in VirtualDub like you normally would. In case your file doesn't show up, select 'All files (*.*)' from the file type list and after selecting your file, select 'DirectShow input driver' from the file types list. |

| I'm leaving this topic open for a while so people can ask questions, write suggestions or give their own advice how to open a file with a certain plugin. Eventually it is going to be reposted and locked though. |

+ And also for .MTS and .M2TS I believe so. Note: One needs to enable the handling of Transport Streams while installing the splitter. |

| Ok, I've added those. |

| I'm using your method. I have installed everything you mentioned, and didn't change anything from the default settings. It still gives me an error. http://img337.imageshack.us/i/erroraw.jpg/ |

It looks like you're trying to use VirtualDubMod, which does not support input plugins. 'Latest' version of VDM is based on VirtualDub 1.5.10 (december 2003!) - input plugins support has been added to VD since 1.7.2 version (may 2007). Use current version of http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/. |

| I've run into two problems with this. The first is when I try to play the file, it gives me this error: "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format. Source format tag: fffe" I solved this problem by going to "Audio" and selecting "No audio". If I remember correctly from the other thread, this problem still being worked on. I don't actually need the audio anyway. But the other problem is that the files now play erratically. I think it has something to do with the default 30 fps limit. Watching the slider at the bottom, it says it's playing by 4 or 5 frame increments, when in fact it's displaying normally, but at half speed with the additional jump here and there. I tried playing around with the compression plug-ins, but none seem to have the right effect. Does anyone know how to fix this? |
| Posted by: stephanV Jun 18 2010, 07:41 AM | ||
If that is you error I'm not sure if you are using the DirectShow driver. Do you see anything when opening the file, and then going to file > file information? It could also be that the audio has more than 2 channels and VirtualDub doesn't handle this AFAIK. You would have to downmix yourself in the DirectShow filter. |

| Hey stephanV great plugin, thanks! That works like avisynth command..?
and what more file formats support..? |
| Posted by: stephanV Jun 19 2010, 06:27 PM | ||||
That's correct. In principle you can open any file you can open via DirectShow. |

| Will this work for opening mpeg2 vob files? |
| Posted by: stephanV Jul 3 2010, 05:25 AM |
| It can, but you can also try ffchandler's MPEG2 plugin for that. |
| Posted by: razon Jul 3 2010, 05:49 PM |
| Just want to confirm that I should install all three of the items mentioned in the first post. Is there anything else that needs to be configured or should the default setting work? |

| What would be nice would be a box that you could tick or untick to automatically open all files with the directshow plugin or use vfw codecs. It's a real pain having to select the directshow plugin in the dropdown list for every single file that you want to open when we could just drag and drop if we had this option. Would sure speed up the process when you're working in a folder full of unsupported files. |
| Posted by: Jam One Dec 13 2010, 09:28 PM |
| I only drag-and-drop. And open files with "right click - Open With". Eternally. mp4, flv, mov, mts, m2t, vob, m4v, qt, ts ... I NEVER use "File - Open file" dialog. No problems whatsoever (except with AAC audio, alas). You wish to check your configuration closely, I suppose. |
| Posted by: DarrellS Dec 14 2010, 09:48 PM |
| I had a folder full of H264/AAC FLV files that would not open correctly with fcchandler's FLV plugin. Any FLV created with ffmpeg is not compatible with the FLV plugin. My only options were to either open each one separately with the directshow input driver or convert them all to MKV and use the MKV plugin to open with drag and drop. If there was a way to to tell Virtualdub to use the directshow driver as default "open with" then I would not have had to convert all the files to MKV to get Virtualdub to open them correctly. |
| Posted by: Jam One Dec 15 2010, 08:38 PM |
| 1) Open some file using the DirectShow Input Driver. 2) Go to "File -- File properties". 3) Type additional file extensions in the dialog, like: flv m2t mts mov qt mp4 m4v ... whatever format extension you have directshow decoders to. 4) Close VirtualDub 5) REMOVE proprietary input plugins for FLV, MP4, QuickTime, other conflicting plugins, if any, from the "Plugins32" folder of VirtualDub. ...I'm sure you'll succeed... |
| Posted by: DarrellS Dec 17 2010, 09:48 PM |
| I tried that before except I didn't remove the FLV plugin and it did not work. I uninstalled ffdshow and reinstalled it, removed the FLV plugin and it wouldn't open any FLV. Kept giving me an error (unable to set filename on media detector: hr=80040200). Put the FLV plugin back in and it opened regular FLV again but no 264/AAC FLV (Iwas able to open H264 FLV before with "Open With Directshow". Not sure why I can't now and I've lost thumbnail view for H264 FLV now. I've got ffdshow set to decode H264. Maybe the new version of ffdshow is screwed up. I'll try an older version. |
| Posted by: ale5000 Dec 17 2010, 11:23 PM |
| If you want to use the FLV input plugin you have to enable H.264 in ffdshow VFW interface => Decoder => Codecs instead if you want to use the DirectShow input plugin you have to enable H.264 in ffdshow video decoder => Codecs Additional note for DirectShow input plugin: Sometimes open directly doesn't work and you have to explicitely select "DirectShow input driver" in the open dialog and you cannot use drag 'n' drop in this case. Download ffdshow-tryout from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ or use the one inside the K-Lite Codec Pack. PS: Upload one .flv that isn't compatible with the FLV input plugin so I can try. |
| Posted by: Jam One Dec 18 2010, 06:05 PM | ||
Are you sure you have directshow FLV SPLITTER in your system?... I'm afraid, many sorts of files require a SPLITTER, not just "a decoder". Like the Haali one for MP4, MOV, MTS, etc. I've got FLV Splitter 1.0.0.5 from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/DirectShow%20Filters/ |
| Posted by: ale5000 Dec 18 2010, 07:08 PM |
| If you use the FLV input plugin you don't need a splitter, just a VFW decoder (enable it in ffdshow VFW interface) instead if you use the DirectShow input plugin, the file need to be playable with a DirectShow player like MPC-HC or Windows Media Player. |

| Something got mucked up in my system. I had everything set up the way it should be but it didn't work (I should say it stopped working because it did work before) so I uninstalled and reinstalled ffdshow, Haaili splitter and reregistered FLVSplitter.ax and everything is working the way it should be working again. I converted a working MKV to FLV with ffmpeg and dragged and dropped it into Virtualdub and it opened up the way it's supposed to. I also used the open with directshow input driver option and it opened just fine. I had to update my video card drivers also because I was having an overlay problem that I didn't have before. Something screwed my system up pretty good. Might be time for another clean install of XP since none of my backups seem to be perfect either. |

| I have a large WMV file generated using Windows Live Movie Maker - 97 Mbytes. I want to cut the file size down to be able to include it in one of my websites. I have used VirtualDub in the past but am having a problem with this WMV file. I get an error message - "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format - Source format tag: 0162." I have loaded the VirtualDub plugin folder with the free codec package obtainable at videohelp.com/tools/virtualdub. This codec pack has enabled me to get VirtualDub to at least accept WMV files. I am using the Windows XP operating system. Thanks in advance for any help!! |

Post the MediaInfo log of the wmv file.
Have you tried with the latest version of the FLV plugin? http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/FLV/ |
| Posted by: jbionic Feb 20 2011, 04:24 AM |
| Installed all codes and plugins as prescribed in the first post. Now VirtualDub recognizes an mkv file however fails to open it. Instead it says ![]() Does anyone understand what options and where I gotta check? |
| Posted by: jbar61 Mar 3 2011, 02:52 AM |
| please check your download links in the first post. Norton stopped me stating one was a known malicious site. I then stopped. |
| Posted by: ale5000 Mar 3 2011, 03:15 AM |
| All links in the first post are good. Beside that, there isn't any site more malicious than Norton itself |
| Posted by: stephanV Mar 3 2011, 07:58 AM | ||
All links are good. It would also have been nice if your information would have been more specific. It's rather hard to guess which link would be the offender if you don't have Norton installed. |

| I'm having a problem similar to other who posted on this topic about a year ago. I was wondering if the issue was resolved or explained and that I just haven't found it: I was able to import a HD m2ts into virtualdub using the technique described at the start of this topic, then used filters to deinterlace the image and get everything looking nice. However, when I save the new avi, it comes out with an incredibly slow frame rate. I've noticed that in virtualdub's framerate box it describes my clip as being 29.n frames, however, I was led to believe that it was actually 59.n frames. I've tried adjusting the frame rate many different ways, but always end up with an extremely slow frame rate and erratic, jumpy sound. Can somebody explain to be a possible step I may be missing? thanks in advance! |

| Ok so I'm going to need your help with a simple issue but I just can't seem to get an appropriate solution going. All I want to do is take an mkv file and make a 2 minute clip of it. I tried downloading the plugins listed here and placed them in the plugin folder but I simply get an error message. I went and downloaded avi synth and made a script using avimod in which case it's able to be opened by Virtualdub but when I click play the slider doesn't move at all and remains stuck. If I were to open it in virtualdubmod I do get a smooth playback but no audio is heard in the preview or after I make the clip. Also I noticed that sometimes my video will have subtitles and other times subtitles will not appear. How do I toggle this feature? I would love to be able to make "raw" versions of the clips I'm editing. |

With or without recoding?
Exactly which plugins and what error message?
Without any other audio problems (such as lack of 'system' sounds)? What is content of Avisynth script?
You mean, when import through Avisynth (DirectShowSource)? |
| Posted by: G-Force Aug 29 2011, 02:32 PM |
| Thank you placio for taking the time to reply to me. 1. I don't know what that means. I would think that it's without recording as I don't intend on adding footage or audio and I'm just clipping the video. 2. The plugins I downloaded were the Directshow Input Driver (which was placed in the plugin folder) when I tried to open the mkv file in VirtualDub it said that the file was of an unknown or unsupported file type. 3. No other audio errors surfaced. The contents of the avisynth script is just a single line of "DirectShowSource" along with the file name. 4. Exactly. I remember not seeing any subtitles when I first made the clip then by checking one of the oxes (I forgot which one) the subtitles later appeared. I wish to know to replicate these results. |

| This may mean that you have not installed required appropriate DirectShow filters. But... through DirectShow import driver (or Avisynth), VirtualDub gets uncompressed audio and video. So, then You can save A/V as uncompressed or must encode/compress using some codecs. Try http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/Matroska/index.html with required appropriate VfW and ACM codecs (for example: http://komisar.gin.by/ or ffdshow VFW for AVC video and http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/AACACM/index.html for AAC audio). Or try Avidemux. Or try splitting (in global tab) in mkvmerge (a bit uncomfortable, but...). |

| Hi everyone, total newbie here. I have downloaded VirtualDub (32bit) and have installed ffdshow. I have also copied the vfd file to my plugins folder. I am still unable to open video files with VirtualDub. I'm sure I'm probably doing something wrong, so here;'s my questions: 1. After installing ffdshow, and after copying the vfd file to the plugins dir, shouldn't I be able to open MPG-2 and .M2TS files? 2. Is there a complete list of steps to install and configure VirtualDub? 3. How do I properly iopen these files. It's embarrassing to be this lost, but VirtualDub and all its power is extremely archaic to get used to and I need someone to bail me out by pointing me in the right direction. My only need is to be able to resize/crop existing M2TS files into different dimensions, and it looks like VirtualDub is the only utility that does that. Thanks for any help anyone can provide on getting me up and running, Highwinder |

| Remux the m2ts file to mkv with http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ (it is fast and quality remain the same). Then open the mkv in VirtualDub with this:

| ALE500, thanks for the reply. Can I not work directly with M2TS files (do I HAVE to convert them to MKV)? It's been my (very limited) experience that there's really no such thing as a truly lossless conversion. I'm also interested in avoiding a potentially unnecessary additional hassle if at all possible. I am a complete noob, so what is the CORRECT and COMPLETE process for adding required codes and drivers to VirtualDub? It seems like this can turn into a complete mess, which I want to avoid. I installed FFDSHOW, and added the file to the plugins folder, but I see no differenc ein what kind of files I am able to open in VirtualDub. Are there special tricks to installing all of this and getting it working? Assume for a moment that I know practically NOTHING about proper codecs and their proper method of installation in VirtualDub, so that's why I'm here groveling to the gurus. I really appreciate this assistance, VirtualDub is the only utility out there than can edit video files the way I need to, but I'd much rather work directly with M2TS files if at all possible. From what I have read, it looks like I should be able to. Also: Can anybody tell me if they have good codecs/drivers for the 64-bit version? Would MUCH rather use that if I can - the files I'm working with can get pretty big. Epic Mucho Thanko, Highwinder |
| Posted by: ale5000 Feb 16 2012, 04:03 PM |
| Remuxing isn't a conversion. It just change the container format, the video and audio remains the same. Probably the FFmpeg Input Driver can open it directly but the direct stream copy in VirtualDub won't work. List of input plugins and codecs: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=19488 PS: If you use 32-bit VirtualDub then you should use also 32-bit input plugins and VFW/ACM codecs othewise 64-bit input plugins and VFW/ACM codecs. |

| Thanks again for your reply, good info, thanks! Ok, I'm aware that I need to use 32-bit or 64-bit plugins to match the version I'm using. BUT: 1. What is the proper way to install/configure the plugins? 2. Once they are installed, how do I properly open media files in VirtualDub that the plug-ins are supposed to support? With all the suggestions and advice given by many, I still have yet to see a clear explanation of how this is supposed to be properly configured and used. "You need this codec" is only the first half of the explanation. What do do with it and how to use it is the rest of the information I still need. Again, your help is greatly appreciated. I cannot overstate my obvious noobness, so please forgive. - Highwinder |

| For input plugins you just need to place the files with vdplugin extension in the plugins32 / plugins64 folder and they are automatically used. VFW/ACM codecs are automatically used once installed, you just need to configure ffdshow-tryouts under ffdshow VFW interface (yellow icon) => Decoder => Codecs. |

| 1. "For input plugins you just need to place the files with vdplugin extension in the plugins32 / plugins64 folder and they are automatically used." Ok, this part I get, easy. And thanks. 2. "VFW/ACM codecs are automatically used once installed, you just need to configure ffdshow-tryouts under ffdshow VFW interface (yellow icon) => Decoder => Codecs. " This part I don't understand. I went to this menu - what is it exactly that I'm supposed to be configuring and why? What does this have to do with using VirtualDub? Thanks again, - Highwinder |
| Posted by: ale5000 Feb 17 2012, 07:30 PM |
| When you install ffdshow-tryouts, some things are enabled and some others no. In this menu you choose what to enable. For example, if you want to open an mkv file with H.264 video and AAC audio you need the Matroska input plugin + enable H.264 in ffdshow-tryouts configuration (VFW) + AAC ACM Codec. PS: In ffdshow-tryouts configuration "disabled" means disabled, all other values means enabled. PS2: Here I'm talking about "normal" input plugins, FFmpeg and DirectShow input plugins are different. |

| Man, I'm just having the worst luck in the world with VirtualDub and these MKV files (and MP4 and M2TS files as well). VirtualDub says "missing codec" when I try to load them even though I have ffdshow-tryouts and the right 64-bit plugin installed. I see the file support in the open file dialog, so I know I got that part right. I'm producing MP4 files with Cyberlink PowerDirector and converting them to MKV files with MKVToolNix. At least I'm getting that far, and Windows Media Player can play them all just fine. But then its VirtualDub's turn. In VirtualDub, I just get a black screen with "missing codec", even though I have all the 64-bit plug-ins correctly installed and I can see all the different file formats in the open file dailog. 1. What is it specifically that I'm supposed to configure in ffdshow to get ANYTHING working? 2. Why is VirtualDub still puking on these files when even Windows Media Player is having no problems? 3. Can somebody maybe export their ffdshow decoder settigns so I can import them? Heeeeelp!!! (pulling hair) - I've wasted a whole day on trying to get this mess to work. - Highwinder |
| Posted by: ale5000 Feb 18 2012, 05:27 AM |
| Windows Media Player is insignificant since VirtualDub doesn't use DirectShow codecs. Inside VirtualDub go on File => File informations and post the results so I can know what codec is needed. PS: You can open mp4 files directly with the http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=19488 |
| Posted by: Highwinder Feb 18 2012, 03:36 PM |
| For MP4, MOV, and MKV, I get this: Actual QuickTime Format: MPEG-4 AVC (avc1) Decompressor (fourcc): Missing Codec (avc1) It won't recognize M2TS files at all, VirtualDub throws an error. Plugins loaded: AC364 DShowInputDriver FLV64 Matroska64 MPEG264 QuickTime64 WMV64 What I'd REALLY like to do is simply work with MP4 and M2TS files directly. (possible?) I also just uninstalled ffdshow-tryouts, it somehow messed up the existing codecs on my machine (Windows, Xvid and Divx), it somehow broke Windows Media Player so it wouldn't work. Uninstalled ffdshow and everything's back to normal. What a mess. And this is rather embarrassing needing to have my hand held like this. But the help is appreciated. - Highwinder |
| Posted by: ale5000 Feb 18 2012, 03:41 PM |
| When it say missing codec it means that it has opened the file correctly but it miss the codec to decompress the video. For "avc1" you need: ffdshow VFW interface (yellow icon) => Decoder => Codecs => H.264/AVC => libavcodec or x264vfw PS: ffdshow-tryouts is essential for almost everything. |
| Posted by: Highwinder Feb 18 2012, 04:47 PM |
| I did as you suggest, and configured as you specified (I appreciate it) with ffdshow-tryouts. No change, however. ffdshow-tryouts loaded, and I double checked the settings. I am still getting the AVC1 error, MKV files are still loading up as black boxes with "Missing Codec". Isn't ffshow-tryouts is supposed to fix this? Trying x264vfw. - Highwinder. ------------------- UPDATE: Nope - no difference with x264vfw loaded. This is getting frustrating. Am I missing a proper plugion or something? Do I have too many plugins or codecs loaded? Is ffdshow-tryouts the only codec pack I'm supposed to have installed on my machine (is it supposed to handle everything out there in place of any other codec I might have installed on my machine)? Is there a way to force VirtualDub to use a specific codec? It just seems like I'm relying on VirtualDub to figure things out on its own and it looks like it's not very good at it. - Highwinder |

| Pay attention, you shouldn't go in the video configuration (red icon) but the vfw configuration (yellow icon). Also try with both 32-bit and 64-bit VirtualDub. If it still doesn't work, try to post a file (possible small) where the problem happen. |

"Pay attention, you shouldn't go in the video configuration (red icon) but the vfw configuration (yellow icon)." That's exactly what I've done - I have never gone into the red icon, never touched it. That's why I'm so puzzled. What type of file is it that you want me to post? DISCOVERY (thanks to your advice): Things appear to work with the 32-bit version, which leads me to believe that there's something "32-bit" going on under the hood somewhere that VirtualDub is puking on. But I REALLY want to use the 64-bit version due to the file sizes I'm working with. - Highwinder |
| Posted by: ale5000 Feb 18 2012, 08:58 PM | ||
This simply mean that you have only installed the 32-bit versions of ffdshow-tryouts / x264vfw and not the 64-bit versions. |

| I have Virtualdub 32bit version 1.9.11 . I installed Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow tryouts. I downloaded the DShowInputdriver-0.92 and placed the release folder in the plugins folder inside the Virtualdub program folder. I open Virtualdub, select open video file, select all files, choose a m2ts file then look through the Files of type drop down menu and no DShowInputDriver option is listed. And of course if I click open, Virtualdub tells me its an unsupported format. What have I done wrong? |

| Hello, I've already managed to set up DShowInputDrive and ffdshow. I also have the Matroska, QuickTime, and WMV codecs. After setting all that up, I was able to successfully load mp4's and wmv's. Unfortunately, for mp4's, I encountered a missing sound compressor error. After some research, found oout about the AAC ACM codec, but when I try to install it, I get this error "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation." I don't know what I'm supposed to do now. Additionally, when I try to load WMV's, I get "missing codec". Looking under file information, I get this, which I have no idea what the information means. http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/3540/wmvplugin.png I'm using Virtual Dub 32-Bit on a Windows 7 64-Bit. Any advice on what I should to get my videos working and audio playing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ruzu P.S. I have been using Cyberlink PowerDirector 10 for a while now, but have found Virtual Dub to provide incredibly superior smooth editing abilities. I now just use PowerDirector to boost the quality of any videos cut with Virtual Dub. What I've found amazing is how you can move the slider back and forth with no 'lag'. I've been able to view some of my most favorite videos in perfect slow-mo detail ;] Edit: I'm fine with the AVI files I get through FRAPS and Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, but, I'd like to still be able to edit the typical mp4 and wmv files through Virtual Dub. However, if I try to convert a file to avi through download helper, Virtual Dub rejects it, so, no clue there. Additionally, if I try to edit files I've converted through DiVx(Which I've long sinced uninstalled, that works too, but, there is a lot of video distortion. |

Thanks a lot Abrazo! That last link solved the mp4 and wmv issues for me. The only pain in the arse is that I have to manually load the files from the open file dialog. Still, it works so I thank you! |

| Hi.. I need to split a few *.mp4 files.. if somebody help me out will be great. Anyway.. I try to read previous post here and Im lost.. really. Ive install matroska spiltter.. and other files.. and nothing. With *.avi was simple.. open files/set compression/split end of story.. with *.mp4 - black magic so far to me. BTW I use VirtualDub-1.10.0-AMD64. one more thing.. if somebody want to ban me instead for such stupid question, I have one thing to justify this. I just saw my butcher .. yy.. I mean dentist today.. still bleeding (me not a dentist) and my brain is still under strong painkiller. regards |

| Not easily better have a look here http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/video-de-multiplexers to find a tool that can demux mp4. This said as depends what the mp4 container contains. Where many virtualdub video load plugins will not allow direct stream copy of raw video. When virtualdub cannot load the file to work with and need to use plugins If can load and play the mp4 with virtualdub then select video and audio for direct stream copy then File > Export video accept any options as is and save with .m4v extension. Check what your audio format is from File > File Information and save the audio with extension for your audio format .mp3, .mp2 or .ac3 for examples |

| I suppose you have installed FFMpeg inputdriver plugin (FFInputDriver.vdplugin) in the plugins32 folder of VirtualDub. (it was not yet there in your print screen) Now you start VirtualDub and click File > Open Video File. When in the "Open Video File" dialogbox, first select the file you want to open (one single click on it, I mean: do not double-click !) Then at "Files of type" : select FFMpeg supported files. Now click the "Open" button. Does this work ? |

Yes, this actually work thanks! The only downside of this is that I can't really browse fast through the file. Normally I use shift+cursor keys to jump from [K] to [K] frame, but opening it the way you describe causes every single frame to be a keyframe. Using alt+cursor jumps 50 frames, but when keeping it pressed, the movie freezes until you let it go. I assume the 'reconstructing'bar which normally appears when loading a file fixes the proper keyframes/index? |

| Hello, I have one question about appending videos if I can get any help it would be nice. I have installed directshow input plugin (as written in the first post) and can now play MP4 vids fine. However, it seems that VDub will append only .avi files : when I have a MP4 video opened, the menu->file->append a video is grayed I thought of converting my MP4 to avi (using VDub) and append those .avi obtained, but then VDub gives me a black box when opening the .avi file it itslef produced, which I find weird... Could you help me fix this? I just would like to work with VDub on MP4 files and be able to append them. Thx! |
| Posted by: Abrazo Aug 13 2013, 08:51 PM |
| Actually with VirtualDub you can only append AVI videofiles. So, if you like to append two ore more MP4 files via VirtualDub, you will first have to convert each one of them to AVI. Now, you say that a file that you converted from MP4 into AVI shows like a black box. I suppose that all following frames also show as black ? What codecs did you set for Audio and Video encoding in respectively the Audio and Video-menu at Compression... ? When you play the MP4 file via the Output playback button, does it show correctly in the right (output) pane or does it show as black ? Which version of VirtualDub do you have installed ? Normally the stable version, i.e. version 1.9.11, should not give this kind of problem. |

Alternatively, use avisynth and a script.
# download and install AviSynth http://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/ # download the required plugin, http://code.google.com/p/ffmpegsource/downloads/detail?name=ffms2-2.18-rc1.7z&can=2&q= # and unzip the file ffms2.dll to the Avisynth/plugins folder. # Haali splitter may also be required to be installed # http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Haali-Media-Splitter # resizing the source width so that it's divisible by 4 may be required. # example, the resolution of my clips was 550 x 360, add .lanczosresize(448, 360) to each line. # copy the code lines into NotePad and save the file as append.avs (instead of append.txt) # If the .avs script is not in the same folder as the source .mp4 files, the complete path must be shown. # example (ffvideosource("C:\Users\Superuser\Desktop\p3.mp4") instead of ("p3.mp4") # open the avs file in VirtualDub |

| Thank you for your answers. The problem was that I had installed another plugin (quicktime plugin) after the file conversion from MP4 to avi and for some reason it prevented VDub from reading MP4 files... removed the plugin, problem solved. But still it is weird that the quicktime plugin acts this way. Yet another question I read that I must choose a compression if I don't want my files to weight several GB when saving, OK. I use Xvid MPEG-4 codec, I don't know much about it but think it is quite OK. My question is : will the quality of my video decrease everytime I save it with this compression, like it does for pics with JPEG compression? I'd like to work as much as possible on raw material until I finish my work and finally add a compression to the final result, can I do that? |
| Posted by: Abrazo Aug 14 2013, 07:59 PM |
| Indeed, practically all codecs are "lossy", what means that every time you (re)compress the video you will loose (a little bit of) quality. While working on video, you can temporary use a "lossless codec" like Lagarith: > http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html Once the video is final, you can compress it with Xvid or x264vfw: > http://www.xvid.org > http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/ |

| SUCCESS with .MP4 and .MOV in VirtuallDub 64-bit! It is running Deshaker about twice as fast as 32-bit VirtualDub does. * Installed ffdshow ***64-bit***, rev. 4515 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/SVN%20builds%20by%20clsid/64-bit%20builds/, -- check boxes for VfW and VirtualDub application plugin during installation. In the plugins64 folder of the VirtualDub folder: * Installed Haali media splitter, (Matroska64.vdplugin) from http://haali.su/mkv/ * Installed QuickTime64.vdplugin from http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/ Also --from mirror site http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/ as fcchandler's site is down: * AC364.vdplugin * FLIC64.vdplugin * FLV64.vdplugin * WMV64.vdplugin * DShowInputDriver from http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=15093 (I had some success opening .MP4s with this earlier. Just keeping it in case...) Also installed outside the VirtualDub folder: *x264vfw, 32-bit, x264vfw_38_2274bm_36885.exe from http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/x264vfw/38_2274bm_36885/x264vfw_38_2274bm_36885.exe/stats/timeline -- don't know if this does anything but it doesn't hurt. * Xvid codec (which I use when encoding in VirtualDub) from http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html * ffmpeg-20131010-git-996c734-win64-static -- three files in this archive, don't know whether this is necessary but it doesn't hurt, from http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ * QuickTime 7.7.4, from Apple -- I bought the Pro license so I could use it to edit, but that is probably unnecessary. * Canopus codec which opens DV files from an old Canon camera -- http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/file.php?id=184 * AAC ACM and AC3 ACM codecs from http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/ None of this is interfering with the 32-bit VirtualDub installation which also is running on my machine. |

| I can open an MTS file with ffinputdriver 0.7 or 0.8 but with problems. File is interlaced 1440 x 1080, 16 x 9 aspect ratio from Canon Vixia RF300 camcorder Playback on a Dell XPS 360 with Intel Core2 Quad 9450 processor and dual NVidia 9800 GT graphic cards is slow, with pulsing audio. Playback slows when more apps are open. When I stop playback or close VirtualDub, it crashes. Same behavior with VirtualDub 64-bit 1.09.10 and 10.10.4 beta. File plays perfectly in Windows Media Player under Windows 7 Home Premium. How to resolve problem? |
| Posted by: meowmeow Oct 14 2013, 10:50 PM | ||
Try setting "render pipelining" in "options - performance..." to a minimum, telling CPU to work in current time. Might give slower encoding. Don't know what to do with crashes. Drive safe |
| Posted by: jsallen Oct 14 2013, 11:59 PM |
| Tried the render pipelining -- still runs slow. I've stopped play a couple of times and closed VirtualDub with the file open, and no crash though. It might work OK on my faster computer when I get it back from repair, though this one is no slowpoke. |

| I am using VD only for the "deshaker". For opening mp4 I had installed the right plugins. Since I got better cameras with good IOS I used it rarely Now I got a new lumia 720 phone with very good sound and video - but no IOS. I could not open the mp4 files with my old VD setup. I found this new setup for VD (latest version 1.10.4) - install the codec "x264vfw" on the computer: http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/ - convert mp4 files to avi before editing in VD with "mp4cam2avi": http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/ You don't need any more plugins in VD. Just have to convert first, but mp4cam2avi works VERY fast with good results. Compression with x264vfw is effective and quality looks good to me. Overall quality with "deshaker 3.0" is fine, very good stabilisation of shaky video, almost like a much more expensive lumia with IOS. |

| To open MP4 directly via VirtualDub you should need: - Quicktime plugin - X264vfw video-codec - AAC acm audio-codec that you can find here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/fcchandler/files/?source=navbar Only take care to use 32-bit or 64-bit versions corresponding to your VirtualDub installation. Installation of the QuickTime plugin goes by opening the ZIP-file and extracting the QuickTime.vdplugin file to the Pluginsxx subfolder of your VirtualDub installation... nothing more. When in the "Open Video File" dialogbox of VirtualDub, select the *.MP4 file, then at "Files of type", select "QuickTime files", and click the Open-button. - - - - - An alternative to this, would be the installation of the FFMPeg inputdriver plugin, that you can find here: > https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubffmpeginputplugin/ Installation is quasi the same as for the QuickTime plugin, but you must also take care to extract the ffdlls subfolder with its content to the Pluginsxx subfolder. |

| Thank you for the info! Solution 1 (QT plugin/fcchandler and AACacm codec) works fine, I can open the mp4 directly in VD (without using mp4cam2avi) Solution 2 (FFMpeg Input Plugin) seems to open the file, displays the first frame, but when playing it comes up with an "error while seeking file" Anyway the first solution is good for me! |

| Good to hear that. Myself I did a few tests with the FFInputDriver.vdplugin (dated 23/01/2014) and do not have any problem when opening 1280x720p MP4-files, with H264 video-encoding and AAC audio-encoding (verified via File > File Information... > "FFMPeg Information"-dialogbox). Regards. |

| I have for many years used the "tateu-plugin" without any problems for opening .mp4 files. Am I outdated doing that? The "tateu-plugin" requires that Quicktime is installed. http://www.tateu.net/software/ Will I gain anything using other plugins? Regards |
| Posted by: Abrazo Feb 16 2014, 08:39 PM |
| For opening MP4 files in VirtualDub, you have different options: - tateu's QuickTime plugin that uses the Apple QuickTime framework - fccHandler's QuickTime plugin that uses Video For Windows codecs and AAC ACM audio-codec - DirectShow plugin that uses DirectShow video- and audio-decoders - FFMpeg plugin that uses its own decoders (*.dll's) There are so many ways to reach Rome, so who is going to tell you what is the best one ? Most chances to have good video- and audio-quality, and to have a reasonable performance, is to use (most) recent versions. The choice for a plugin will depend on the operating system that you are using and what video- and audio codecs (or decoders) are installed. |
| Posted by: -vdub- Feb 17 2014, 01:51 AM |
| For x264 I find this one faster and better than the rest with Virtualdub - fccHandler's QuickTime plugin that uses Video For Windows codecs and AAC ACM audio-codec I have never used this one to know if better, same or worse than the above - tateu's QuickTime plugin that uses the Apple QuickTime framework Future for x265 in mp4 container will likely need then to use the slow next best. Maybe fccHandler could reappear to make some new plugins and updates his other plugins - FFMpeg plugin that uses its own decoders (*.dll's) OT: I like think fccHandler is still with us on this coil. He is just unavailable atm (incarcerated, compulsory military service or similar). I do hope when he returns that everything is ok to visit here again as he did previously |

| Tag "0162" should be WMA v9 pro audio encoding. I think there is no "ACM"-decoder available for this format. So, you will have to make that VirtualDub can use the "DirectShow"-decoders for WMV and WMA on your computer. Via Microsoft Windows Media Player > Help > About Windows Media Player... > Technical Support Information, a web page will show up with - among a lot of other information - a list of "Audio Codecs". In the "Format" column you can see which audio-tags are supported by which module. You shall find the 0162 at "WMAudio decoder DMO" (which is a DirectShow decoder). Similar information for video-tags is available in "Video Codecs", below the list of audio codecs. So, to use the DirectShow decoders in VirtualDub, you will have to download and install the DirectShow input plugin for VirtualDub. More information about this, is available in the following topic: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=15093 EDIT As an alternative solution you can also install the FFMpeg input plugin "v816" for VirtualDub: https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubffmpeginputplugin/ Eventhough I am not sure if it supports the 0162 WMA audio-format. Please do not try with v814 or v815 because these versions can make that VirtualDub crashes when opening WMV. |
