I am trying to load a dummy avi an I am getting an error message that states "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'vifp' (unknown) VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow Codecs, such as the ones used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable." What do I do?

I think you need to install the codec. http://www.fourcc.org/indexcod.htm The VFAPI Codec it seems. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/vfapi_codec.cfm

I am using VD 1.8.8 and I did read about the VFAPI application before for which I did run the bat file and it registered into the system32 folder. The only thing is that I think I ran that before running the proxyoff.reg. But anyhow, double clicking the proxyoff.reg I answered yes and I get the following message "Cannot import E:\Program Files (x86)\VirtualDub-1.8.8\aviproxy\proxyoff.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes. Should I merge it instead?

You shouldn't run proxyoff.reg unless you've run proxyon.reg before.

I get the same message when I run proxyon.reg.

You shouldn't need to run either. VFAPI is completely different from VirtualDub's frameserver system.

I am beginning to think I have a UAC problem with Vista Ultimate. I currently have it off right now and will attempt to run that way. Do you have any suggestions about this? And to be more specific this is what I am trying to do http://forum.videohelp.com/topic338866.html.

Hmm. I don't know how VFAPI works myself, but I'm not sure why UAC would cause a problem. You shouldn't be doing anything that requires Administrator access. You could probably just elevate the processes involved instead of turning off UAC across the board, though.

Elevate the process? How do I do that? I've actually just reinstalled vista. With a fresh install, what would you suggest is the best way to proceed with virtualdub starting fresh in my computer. BTW I am working with Vista Ultimate Platform. Any more details at your request.

You can elevate a process by right-clicking on its icon and selecting Run As Administrator instead of just double-clicking it. This launches the program with full administrative privileges, so it removes the safety of UAC and you don't want to do it unless you have to. The advantage of doing it this way, though, is that you only elevate what you need to instead of running everything with administrative privileges, as disabling UAC does.
