| Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Wmv3vcm: Any Reader For The 1-pass Log? |

| Hi! 0. I know that WMV is still closed project and, probably, my questions will not be answered. But I did not find answers in WMV9VCM.CHM which seems to be the only source of information for end users. Well... 1. Does anybody know a tool to read and analyze statistics of the 1st pass created by WMV9? 2. What exactly is stored in *.tmp file? or in other words, what else (except for average bitrate, certainly) is allowed to change before the 2nd pass? I've tested another width & height (with and without keeping original aspect ratio) and noticed nearly no difference... BTW... Developers in *.HLP wrote absolutely predictable: "Ensure that all compression properties are set for the second pass exactly 3. Well... I must confess I'm not sure This is one more reason why the statistic reader is wanted. Thnx, Alek$ |

| alex, have you tried wmencoder? it acts better in this respect;compared to it,vcm acts like a qucik hack to put wmv9 into .avi..... also(talking about 1pass stuff on vdub) usually all codecs have high bitrate on beginning but fairly quick this gets averaged etc. anyway,i compared vcm to wmencoder and was surprised to see how big teh diferences were (2pass mode).....wmencoder was much better... dump vcm,try wmencoder... asf/wmv can be played via any dshow player as long as wmplayer9 is installed.....(and yes, even if wmplayer9 is installed you can still open avi's with wmp6.4 as you used to before.. hope this helps..... |

Yes, I have... long time ago... WME7 and WME8... My impessions: video encoding is, IMHO, quite good. Audio stream (at least, for WMA8) sounds better than VBR MP3 and OGG (at the same average BR). But the WMV-CONTAINER itself looks ugly
If wmencoder (which one, WME9 or WMV8) is really so cool Once long ago, I heard about a tool named GraphEdit, but never tried to use it... Why? Since last summer M$ released their VCM codec. But You insist that WME is MUCH better than VCM-version... Why should we not to think about it again? |

more and more players have an option to make this possible...(i know zplayer has it...mplayer classic also has it but it's a crappy player...)
wme9..........remux?ask christian hjw.... if you like ultralow bitrates, you should also try realvideo9....(especially for toons) see this http://virtualdub.everwicked.com/index.php?act=ST&f=3&t=5794&st=15 i know for sure it muxes into mkv... i have few images on ultralow bitrates,wait... (this is extremely hard sequence for 350kbit/s@25fps) here http://i4004.bizhosting.com/rv9_wmv9%20natural%20image%20350kbit/ needless to say,mpeg4 would have blocks only for same sequence... /ivo |

| I've had dumped on me a .wmv file that I've GOT to read into Vdub (Vdub-mpeg2). I had researched and "discovered" that supposedly installing the "wmv9VCMsetup.exe" file would enable my machine (and Vdub) to read this file so I can edit it and convert it to a different codec. But it doesn't! Can someone please tell me what I'm missing?? |

| VDub does not work with WMV-containers, since WMV is patented by M$... I can advise to use AviSynth: open docs and look at the command DirectShowSource(). It should help! PS Unfortunately, DirectShowSource() extracts the video stream only. Support of audio stream is still not stable... Probably, the best solution is to use asftools http://www.geocities.com/myasftools/ |
