Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Radius Cinapak - Need To Re-convert To Xvid

Posted by: Morgandy Jul 19 2011, 01:36 PM
Hi all,

the video screen capture program I was use somehow changed to Cinepak from XVID that is the default. I can usually open the files in WMP, but there is no sound. Also, the files are rejected with a number of error statements when I try to open for editing in WMM and Vegas.

Is there any solution through VD? Is there a codec I should download, and if so, how EXACTLY do I install it to VD? Then, would I just do a save as with new file name?

I will be SO grateful if there is an anser and a solution to this.

Thanks,
Amy

What's your operating system?
Video is in AVI container?
What are error messages from WMM and Vegas?
You can open this video in VirtualDub?
Do you have installed ffdshow?

Cinepak codec is installed in Windows system by default (supplied with system).
You can find this codec (installer) on http://www.free-codecs.com/Cinepak_Codec_download.htm (for example).
ffdshow supports (can decode) Cinepak.

If you just want to convert a file to another format, I would recommend using this software "freemake video converter"
Its CUDA accelerated and offers a lot of options with a clean interface.
I like using vdub for processing video and not encoding necessarily.
I also stay away from codec packs since they like taking over the machine without giving consent and they are usually a pain to remove.
