Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Fraunhofer Codecs Missing Below And Above 56k

The registry solution in the thread below worked, so I have no time urgent need for help, just a desire for general knowlege. Thanks!

I reformated for the first time in a while (Win7), and didn't have any ability to encode mp3. I don't like Lame because I can't use CBR at low bitrates, but I did get that working intially.

Browsing the internet indicated that most people should see SOME ability to encode mp3 without Lame installed. Also, of note, I had one old codec pack on my computer from several years ago which, when installed, gave me the <56k compression ability. However, upon installing that I see two "MPEG Layer-3" codecs in the list.

My questions:
1. Any idea why I didn't see the <56 options without the registry entry changing the value of msacm.l3acm from l3codecx.acm to l3codecp.acm? I assume the "x" means it should run "a" or "p"?
2. Where does vdub get the codec list? Why is the Fraunhofer installed from the codec pack different from the one that comes with windows? I looked in WinNT/CurrentVersion/Drivers32 in the registry and didn't see any new entries

Wrong, there are three Fraunhofer ACM codecs (not always present in all systems).
Only one should be present in the codec list.

If I remember correctly:
- l3codecx.acm - Only decoding, no encoding
- l3codeca.acm - Decoding, encoding only at low bitrate
- l3codecp.acm - Decoding, encoding
