Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Problem Installing Ac-3 Acm Codec

Hi. First let me say that I'm not a techie at all. I want to use VirtualDub to convert MPEG files to .avi. I was able to easily download and install the MPEG-2 plugin, but I still need to install the AC-3 ACM codec to handle the audio.

I'm unable to get the installation to work. I've spent hours googling and looking at forums, trying different solutions, but I don't see anything that specifically addresses my problem. Like I said, I'm a technical idiot. The fix is probably easy. I'm hoping so, and I'm hoping someone here will be charitable and help me out.

I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit.

I downloaded and unzipped the folders (I'm assuming it doesn't matter where the unzipped folder is located). Then I followed the instructions to simply double-click on the .bat file. I get an error message from Windows that says: "Setup cannot copy the file AC3ACM.acm. Ensure the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'AC-3 ACM Codec x64" in the drive you specify." Below that it says: "Copy files from" and shows the correct path for the folder that the files are located in.

I read on some other forums that instead of double-clicking the .bat file, I can right-click on the INF file and select Install. When I do that, I get an Install Error message that says "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation."

I read on another forum, too, that the solution for problems installing the codec on Vista 64-bit is to try installing the 32-bit build. So I went into the x86 folder. When I double-click on the .bat file labeled "Install on 32-bit Windows," I get an error that says "Installation failed." When I double-click on the .bat file labeled "Install on 64-bit Windows," I get the same "Setup cannot copy the file AC3ACM" error message. When I right-click on the INF file and select Install, all that happens is that the screen kind of flashes and nothing else happens.

Anyway, I know I'm ignorant when it comes to such things, but I've researched it and tried everything I could think of.

Can anyone help? Pretty please? I would hugely appreciate it and sing your praises forever.

Download the fixed version here: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=3&t=19757&st=40#entry85120

Note 1: You must use the x86 folder for using with 32-bit VirtualDub instead the x64 folder for using with 64-bit VirtualDub (the bit of Windows doesn't matter).
Note 2: You must right click the .bat file an select "Run as administrator" if you are using Windows Vista or higher.
