Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > 6 Channels Pcm To Aac Or Ac3

Hello,

i have a video with the following audio:

Audio
Format : PCM
Codec ID : FFFE
Codec ID/Info : Extensible
Duration : 17mn 15s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 4 608 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L, C, R, Surround: L, R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Resolution : 16 bits
Stream size : 569 MiB (28%)
Interleave, duration : 33 ms (1.00 video frame)
Interleave, preload duration : 500 ms

The thing is i would like to convert the audio to something that is smaller than wave and keep the 6 chanels audio.
If it were with 2 chanles i easly could use lameMP3, but i want to keep the 6 chanels.

I know i can extract the audio from the video, then convert it with a program and then put it back to the video, but i would like to make the whole thing more automatic with the use of the Virtual Dub.

So the question is: is there a codec which can convert 6 channels PCM to AAC or AC3 or something else and the codec can be used in Virtual Dub like lameMP3 for example?
The OS is Windows 7 64bits.

Thank you,
Best regards!

This codec support multi-channel encoding: http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/AC3ACM/
VirtualDub currently "actively" block multi-channel encoding, but you can try with http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/video_editing/virtualdubmod_aud-x_compatible.cfm.

I am trying to convert an MTS file with 5.1 AC3 audio to AVI using Matrox MPEG I-frame HD keeping the 6 channel audio intact. My audio compression selection is "no compression (pcm)". I have successfully converted a stereo MTS file but I'm not having much luck with the 6 channel file. I end up with stereo channels with silence and a few faint noises that don't resemble the original audio.

The objective is to import the AVi into Lightworks NLE.

I have tried Vdubmod surround with no joy.

I have installed on my system, Matrox VfW codecs,. ffdshow tryouts, Haali Media Splitter, Vdub directshow input driver, AC3ACM fix 2 codec, AC3 Vdub plugin.

Any suggestions?

The reply is a bit late but try like this:
1) Remux the file to .mkv with http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/
2) Open the .mkv files in VirtualDub + http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=19488
3) Select Video => Direct stream copy and Audio => Direct stream copy
4) File => Save as AVI...
