Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Codec Discussion > Can't Install Ac3 Codec In Windows 7

Hi. This might be a Windows 7 newbie problem... I'm trying to install the AC3ACM.inf file, but whenever I right click on it and choose "install" a popup window opens for a fraction of a second and then closes again, too fast for me to make out what it says. It doesn't matter whether I choose the x86 or the x64 version. Same result. After that VirtualDub tells me that it still doesn't have a decompressor for the audio format. When I go into "Programs and Features" in the control panel there is an AC-3 ACM Codec on top of the list, but when I click on "uninstall" it tells me that an error occurred and that the program may already be uninstalled and whether I wish to remove it from the list. Do I have to do the installation as administrator or something, and how do I do that?

How? There's no "install as administrator" option. I hate changes! I opened the command prompt as administrator and did the "rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 <drive and path>\ac3acm.inf" thing, as in the other thread down below. The only difference was that I didn't get an error message any more when I uninstalled the codec again in "Programs and Features." But VirtualDub still would tell me that it can't find an audio decompressor. Oh, wait, now it's working. I decided to install the x86 version that way. That one VirtualDub accepted. Well, okay, 32bit it is...
